🇳🇬 Jamiu Ninilowo

The garage in Ikorodu

The facts of his situation were specific and are worth stating without decoration. His mother was injured; he left school; he went to work at a garage in Ikorodu. That is not a story about a child bored with school but about a household that needed another income.

Ikorodu is a large, sprawling district at the northern edge of Lagos. Leaving formal education at that age in that setting generally closes the question permanently, because there is no mechanism that brings a working child back into school. What makes Ninilowo's case reportable is that something did.

Chess in Slums Africa

Chess in Slums Africa, founded by the Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya, teaches the game to children in Lagos's poorest neighbourhoods on the premise that the board itself is the recruiting tool. AFP's 2019 report, carried by outlets including the Malay Mail, described the initiative under a headline about chess offering Nigerian slum children a new move.

Ninilowo emerged as its best player. In April 2019 he won a tournament, and the prize attached to it was the thing that mattered: a donor-funded education. The charity's model turns chess results into schooling, which is why a tournament win in that context is not a sporting footnote.

Why chess, specifically

Chess suits the problem it is being used to solve. It costs almost nothing to teach at scale, it requires no facilities beyond a board, and its results are unarguable — a win is a win, adjudicated by the position rather than by anyone's opinion of the player.

That last property is the important one for a charity trying to persuade donors. A child who has been out of school for a year and is working in a garage has no documentation of ability that anyone will accept. A tournament result is documentation, and it is produced in public. Chess converts unmeasured potential into a verifiable claim, which is exactly what a scholarship decision needs.

Where Jamiu Ninilowo is now

The reporting used here stops in September 2019, when he was 14 and had recently won his education. Whether he completed it, and what he has done since, is not documented in this record.

There is one unresolved thread. A player named Jamiu associated with Chess in Slums was reported in March 2025 to have won gold and a 500-dollar scholarship at a conference in the United States. It may be the same person. The sources used here do not establish that it is, and this page does not assert it. It is recorded as an unconfirmed possibility rather than as a fact.

What the case actually demonstrates

The temptation with a story like this is to read it as proof that talent finds a way. It demonstrates something narrower and more useful: that when an organisation deliberately goes looking in places where nobody screens for ability, it finds ability.

Ninilowo did not become a better player by being noticed. He was already the best player the programme had; what changed was that someone was running a programme in Ikorodu at all. The scarce resource in the story is not chess talent among Lagos children, which appears to be abundant, but the mechanism that converts it into a school place.
