🇳🇬 Ferdinand Maumo

He learned the moves in April 2021. In May he won every game he played.

A boy with cerebral palsy from Lagos's Makoko waterfront became the face of Chess in Slums Africa.

Ferdinand Maumo was about nine, living in Makoko on the Lagos waterfront, when a chess programme reached his neighbourhood in 2021. He learned the game in April. In May he won a tournament with a perfect score, every game, against children who had been playing longer. He has cerebral palsy. Chess.com called him a superstar; Lagos State's governor asked to meet him.

A perfect score, a month after learning

The result that carried his name out of Makoko was simple enough to state and hard to credit: a clean sweep of a tournament roughly a month after being taught the rules. Chess.com reported it in June 2021 under a headline that made the two facts collide, a Nigerian child with cerebral palsy becoming a chess superstar.

Perfect scores happen in junior chess. Perfect scores from a beginner do not. What the result demonstrated was not accumulated knowledge, which he could not have had, but raw calculating ability applied to positions his opponents had learned to handle by rote.

Makoko, and Chess in Slums Africa

Makoko is a dense waterside settlement in Lagos, much of it built on stilts over the lagoon, with limited schooling and almost no formal sport. Ferdinand's parents worked the water and its markets; his mother sold fish, his father fished.

The programme that found him was Chess in Slums Africa, run by Tunde Onakoya, which takes chess coaching into Nigerian informal settlements and uses tournament results to argue for scholarships and sponsorship. Onakoya coached him, and HumAngle's reporting on children in Nigeria's slums finding solace through chess sets out how the model works in practice.

Recognition, and a name that moves

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, met him, an encounter TheCable Lifestyle covered. The Guardian of Nigeria later traced his path from Makoko to the world.

His name is spelled several ways across that coverage: Maumo, Mehunu, Mehunu Mawumo. The Guardian used Ferdinand Mehunu. Anyone searching for him will find the same boy under at least three spellings, an ordinary consequence of a name reaching print through several newsrooms at once.

Where Ferdinand Maumo is now

In March 2025 he travelled to the United States with other children from the programme for the Chess and Community Conference, where he received a Young Genius Award. BellaNaija reported the group's results from the American tournament.

No source used here gives his current rating, his school or his tournament schedule since. What is documented is the award, the trip, and the fact that the programme that found him in 2021 was still working with him four years later.

What the story is actually evidence of

It is tempting to read a case like this as a story about one extraordinary child, and it is that. It is also evidence about the distribution of talent. Chess requires no equipment beyond a board, no facilities and no fees, which makes it one of the few competitive disciplines in which a child from a settlement without a school can be measured on the same scale as a child with a coach.

When that scale is applied in places it is not usually applied, results like Ferdinand's appear. The programme that coached him has produced several such cases, and its argument is that the scarcity is in the opportunity rather than in the children. A boy who learned the moves in April and won every game in May is, on its own, not proof of that argument. But it is the kind of fact the argument is built from.
