The Abu Dhabi norm

An International Master norm is a tournament result, not a title. To be awarded the IM title a player needs three such norms, achieved in qualifying events against a required mix of titled and foreign opponents, together with a rating that has reached 2400. Each norm is therefore a discrete, certified performance rather than a milestone anyone can grind towards gradually.

Chauhan's came at the 2026 Abu Dhabi Masters, with a performance rating of 2527. That figure is the strength his results in that event implied — roughly the level of a strong International Master — and it is what makes the norm rather than the finishing position the story.

A mobile game as the entry point

ChessBase India headlined the route: from a mobile phone game to an IM norm. That framing is doing real work, because it describes a change in how Indian chess recruits.

The old path ran through a club, a coach or a chess-playing relative, all of which require a family already connected to the game. An app requires none of that. A child in any household with a phone can encounter chess, discover an aptitude for it, and be identified long before anyone would have thought to take them to a club. The pipeline that produced India's recent generation of young grandmasters is visibly wider than it was, and stories like this one are the evidence.

What came before the norm

The junior record behind the result is substantial. He was National Under-8 champion in 2022, and in 2021 he had won both the national and the Asian Schools titles at under-7 level in online competition. In 2026 he took silver at the National Under-13 Championship.

That is a player who has been winning in his age group continuously for five years, which is the ordinary prerequisite for an international norm at 12. He is coached by Satyam Warude and holds a scholarship from HelpChess, one of the funding programmes that support promising Indian juniors — support that matters, because international norm-hunting means travelling to foreign tournaments repeatedly, at considerable cost.

Where Avirat Chauhan is now

As of the September 2026 reporting he holds one IM norm and a silver medal from the 2026 National Under-13 Championship. Two further norms and a 2400 rating would complete the International Master title.

He is 12 and the account used here is a single chess-media profile. His rating at the time of writing, his tournament schedule and his subsequent results are not documented in this record, and this page does not project them.

Why India keeps producing players like this

India has become the most productive source of elite junior chess in the world, and the mechanism is not mysterious. A very large population plays, the national federation runs a dense calendar of age-group championships from under-7 upwards, private academies and scholarship funds cover the cost of travel, and online play removes the geography problem entirely.

The result is that a talented Indian child now gets measured early and often, against strong opposition, without needing to live in a chess city. Chauhan's record — an online Asian Schools title at six or seven, a national title at eight, an international norm at twelve — is a clean illustration of that system working, from a phone game to Abu Dhabi in about half a lifetime.
