Austin Russell was the kind of teenager who built his own spectrometers. Growing up in Newport Beach, California, he was obsessed with optics — the science of light, its behavior, its measurement, its manipulation — in a way that went well beyond the level of curiosity that teachers know how to accommodate. He was building functional optical instruments in his bedroom by the time he was twelve. At seventeen, he enrolled at the California Institute of Technology, one of the most selective universities in the world, to study physics. He lasted one semester before Peter Thiel's fellowship intervened and offered him $100,000 to drop out and build a company. He accepted. He was seventeen years old and he already knew what the company would do.
The problem Russell had identified was this: existing LiDAR technology — the laser-based sensing systems that allow autonomous vehicles to perceive the world in three dimensions — was too expensive, too bulky, and too inaccurate to be deployed at automotive scale. LiDAR systems at the time cost tens of thousands of dollars per unit and were often mounted in spinning mechanical assemblies on top of vehicles that looked nothing like production cars. Russell believed that all of these problems could be solved with better physics and better engineering. He founded Luminar Technologies in 2012 — while still in high school, before the Thiel Fellowship — and spent the fellowship years building a team and developing what would become a fundamentally different approach to LiDAR.
Luminar's technology used a longer wavelength of laser light than conventional LiDAR systems — 1550 nanometers rather than the industry-standard 905 nanometers. The longer wavelength allowed for higher power output without damaging human eyes, which in turn allowed for dramatically better detection at long range. The sensors could see objects at distances of up to 250 meters with enough resolution to identify pedestrians and cyclists in time for a vehicle traveling at highway speed to respond. Luminar also developed custom chips and software to process the sensor data. The result was a system that cost a fraction of what existing LiDAR technology cost to produce, and performed significantly better. The automotive industry noticed.

— Austin RussellBy the time Luminar went public in December 2020 through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, the company had partnerships with Volvo, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and NVIDIA, among many others. The IPO valued Luminar at approximately $3.4 billion. Russell, who owned a majority stake in the company, saw his net worth rise above $2 billion overnight, making him, at twenty-five, the youngest self-made billionaire in the world — younger than Mark Zuckerberg had been when he achieved the same distinction, younger than any of the cryptocurrency founders who had become billionaires in their twenties through appreciating token holdings rather than operating companies they had built from physical technology.

The founders who became billionaires fastest in the technology era were almost all building software: platforms, applications, marketplaces, communication tools. Software scales at essentially zero marginal cost, which is why the returns can be so extreme so quickly. Russell built hardware — physical sensors, custom chips, precision optics — which is harder, slower, more capital-intensive, and more likely to fail. He chose the hard path because he believed the problem he was solving required it. Luminar's sensors are now standard equipment on many new Volvo models. The autonomous vehicle industry, which had been stalled by the sensor problem for years, has Luminar's LiDAR in a significant portion of its development fleet. The company continues to develop next-generation sensors under Russell's direction. He remains, as of this writing, not yet thirty.
