It started with reading cards. Ntombikayise Bhengu, a mother in Soweto, Johannesburg, began teaching her daughter Lethukuthula shapes and phonetics in January 2022 — the month the little girl turned two. By May, Lethu, as the family calls her, was reading full sentences. Ntombikayise recorded a video, posted it to TikTok, and the internet did the rest. A clip of the toddler sounding out "My bag is open" with the focused confidence of a child who has entirely mastered a thing accumulated more than thirty-two million views. It was not a performance or a trick; it was a child for whom reading had become as natural as walking, and who wanted to show you.

South Africa has one of the most severe childhood literacy crises in the world. The 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study found that approximately 81 percent of South African Grade 4 students could not read for meaning. Against that backdrop, a toddler from Soweto reading fluently — and doing so joyfully, with evident delight in the words themselves — carried a cultural weight that went far beyond the individual child. She became a symbol in a country where the ability to read is not evenly distributed, where schools in low-income townships often lack the resources that schools in wealthier suburbs take for granted. Lethu came from Soweto and she was reading at two. That fact mattered, and South Africa recognized it.

Her parents, Ntombikayise and Phakiso Bhengu, built a content operation around their daughter's gifts with care and evident intentionality. Under the TikTok and Instagram handle @lethu_nanas, they grew an audience of nearly a million followers who watched Lethu read, count, explore science concepts, and generally demonstrate what happens when a young mind is given both a stimulating environment and parents who pay attention. They launched Mini Brainiacs, a company that sells educational materials — reading cards, counting cards, books, and puzzles — designed to help other parents nurture early literacy. The business turned Lethu's individual gift into a social mission.

"We want other parents to know that your child can do this too. You just have to start early and make it fun. Lethu loves learning because we made learning a game."

— Ntombikayise Bhengu, Lethu's mother, News24 interview, 2023

In March 2023, at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, Lethukuthula Bhengu won the Favourite African Kidfluencer category. She was three years old — almost certainly the youngest winner in the award's history. She beat a field that included Anele Mdoda's son Alakhe, stylist Tshepi Vundla's son Siba Bogopa, and celebrated young DJ Arch Jnr, who had his own remarkable early-achievement story. The fact that she won on the strength of social media votes — that hundreds of thousands of people chose to cast their votes for a toddler who liked to read — says something about how deeply her story had resonated. She won on the same night as Trevor Noah, who took home the Favourite TV Host award. The comparison was not lost on South African commentators: two people from very different generations, both from the same country, both recognized for doing something remarkable with words.

Lethu's YouTube channel, Lethu TV, extended the family's content reach beyond TikTok and Instagram into long-form video, where young viewers could watch her work through educational exercises. In 2023, a video of her conducting a simple electric circuit experiment went viral across South African social media, demonstrating that her capabilities extended beyond reading into scientific curiosity. She was, by then, not simply a reading prodigy but a fully-fledged early learner whose appetite for knowledge appeared to operate in multiple directions simultaneously.

"She doesn't see learning as work. For Lethu, every new word, every new number, every new fact is a discovery. That's the gift we're trying to share."

— Phakiso Bhengu, Lethu's father, Briefly.co.za interview, 2023

The societal response to Lethu's story illuminates something important about what South Africans want to see represented. She is a Black child from Soweto, one of the most historically significant urban townships on the African continent — a place that produced Nelson Mandela's political formation and Desmond Tutu's early ministry, a place that carries enormous symbolic weight in the post-apartheid imagination. That a child from Soweto is not merely literate but extraordinarily, precociously literate, that she is being celebrated nationally and internationally for intellectual gifts, that her parents built a business from that gift that offers other families the same tools — all of this lands with particular force in a society still working through the educational inequities that apartheid created and that post-apartheid policy has only partially addressed.

At the time of writing, Lethukuthula Bhengu is approximately five years old. Whatever her future holds — continued extraordinary development, or the more uneven path that gifted early learners often follow — her impact is already fixed. Thirty-two million people have watched a two-year-old from Soweto read. They did not watch out of mere curiosity. They watched because she reminded them that intelligence appears in every community, on every street, in every township, wherever there are parents willing to look for it and nurture what they find.

Why This Matters

Lethukuthula Bhengu matters for reasons that go beyond the remarkable fact of a two-year-old reading fluently. She matters because she appeared in Soweto — a township that, in the global imagination, is associated with struggle, with history, with political transformation — and demonstrated something that no one expected to be a story from that particular postcode: a toddler who loves books. In a country where the majority of children cannot read for meaning by the end of primary school, her story is both an inspiration and an implicit challenge. Her parents did not have special resources or special connections. They had intentionality, time, phonics cards, and a daughter who was paying attention. Mini Brainiacs is the family's attempt to share that formula. The fact that nearly a million people follow her family's account suggests that a great many South African parents are hungry for exactly this kind of practical, joyful, township-born proof of what is possible when you start early and make learning something worth showing up for.
