Won the Bachauer's Young Artists gold at 16 — in a field capped at 18

Gold Medal, 2026 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, Young Artists Edition • $15,000 first prize • Final round played with the Utah Symphony

The Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City has been running for five decades, and its Young Artists Edition is open to pianists aged 15 to 18 — a three-year band in which the oldest competitors have had time to build a full concerto repertoire and the youngest usually have not. In June 2026, in the competition's fiftieth-anniversary edition, the gold medal and the $15,000 first prize went to Ziyu Shao of China, aged 16. The final round was played with the Utah Symphony on 27 June, with five finalists performing concertos.

Concerto finals are the part of a piano competition that cannot be prepared in isolation. A competitor who has spent a year polishing a solo programme still has to walk on stage, meet an orchestra and a conductor with minimal rehearsal, and hold an ensemble together in a work written for a soloist twice their age. It is the round in which competitions are usually decided, and it is the round in which the youngest finalists most often lose ground.

Shao studies with Elena Berezkina at the Gnessin Moscow Secondary Specialized Music School — one of the two conservatory-track secondary schools that have supplied the Russian piano tradition for a century — and his competition biography lists a laureate placing at the 2023 Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Weimar along with first prizes at the International Chopin Competition in Poland, the International Vladimir Krainev competition in Moscow and the Horowitz Memorial Competition in Ukraine. These are junior and youth events; none of them is the decennial Warsaw Chopin Competition, and this page does not imply otherwise.

The Bachauer runs a Junior Edition alongside the Young Artists Edition, and the 2026 junior first prize went to the 14-year-old South Korean pianist Jueon Lee, with 11-year-old Menhe Liu of China second and 14-year-old Junye Huang of China third. The two competitions run in the same city in the same month and together form one of the largest single gatherings of pre-conservatory pianists in the world.

The 2026 jury was chaired by Douglas Humpherys and comprised Alvin Chow, Daejin Kim, Alexander Korsantia, Lori Sims, Carolyn True and Eleanor Wong — a panel drawn from Eastman, Juilliard, the Korea National University of Arts, the New England Conservatory and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Competition results are judged opinions rather than measurements, and the composition of the jury is the only meaningful guide to what a given result signifies.

What a Young Artists gold at 16 reliably produces is access: prize money, orchestral dates and the attention of the teachers who decide conservatory places. What it does not produce is a career. The competition circuit at this level is dense, the same names recur across several contests in a season, and the gap between winning a youth competition and sustaining a concert life is where most prizewinners are lost. The next verifiable step for Shao is not another junior prize but a senior one.

Winning the top age band of a fifty-year-old international competition two years under the ceiling is a measurable result in a field where most claims are not measurable, and the concerto final — played with a professional orchestra on minimal rehearsal — is the hardest round for a younger competitor to survive.

Two caveats stated plainly. Competition results are jury opinions, not measurements, and this one is a youth prize rather than a senior international title; the Chopin, Krainev and Horowitz first prizes in his biography are junior events and should not be confused with their senior namesakes.
