Father
Jos Verstappen, former F1 driver

Max Verstappen was put in a kart at the age of four by his father, Jos Verstappen, a former Formula 1 driver, and immediately drove it without crashing. This is, admittedly, not an unusual achievement for a four-year-old in a kart — unless the four-year-old is already correcting his lines through corners, already learning to carry speed through an apex rather than brake early, already, in some pre-rational sense, racing. This is what Jos has said about his son, and it is corroborated by the trajectory that followed: European karting championships at ten, eleven, twelve; a move to European Formula Three at sixteen; and then, on March 20, 2015, a Formula 1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso, at seventeen years and 166 days old. It remains the youngest age at which any driver has started a Formula 1 race. No one else is close.

The 2015 season confirmed everything the karting results had suggested. Verstappen was not merely competitive — he was spectacular. He overtook in places where overtaking did not happen, braked later than anyone believed was possible, and displayed a car control and spatial judgment that drivers twice his age described as simply unlike anything they had seen. Red Bull Racing promoted him to their senior team mid-season in 2016, and he won his first race for them — the Spanish Grand Prix — on his debut for the team, at eighteen years old, becoming the youngest race winner in Formula 1 history. He celebrated with the composure of someone who had been expecting it.

The championship, however, required the right machinery, and Red Bull and Verstappen spent four seasons building toward it. He won races, he was fast, he crashed memorably — and he grew. The transformation between the wild teenager of 2016 and the methodical, ruthlessly efficient champion of 2021 is one of the most complete maturations that Formula 1 has ever produced. The 2021 championship was decided at the final lap of the final race, in Abu Dhabi, in circumstances so extraordinary and so disputed that the sport changed its race director protocols as a direct result. Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton on the penultimate lap to take his first World Championship. He was twenty-four years old.

"I don't think about records. I just want to go as fast as possible. Whatever the result, I gave everything."

— Max Verstappen

What followed was a period of dominance more complete than anything Formula 1 had seen since Schumacher's Ferrari years. In 2022, Verstappen won fifteen of twenty-two races and took his second title with four races to spare. In 2023, he won nineteen of twenty-two races — the most wins in a single season in the sport's history, surpassing Schumacher's record of thirteen set in 2004. He clinched the title with six races still to run. His 2023 season was statistically the most dominant individual season any driver had ever produced. In 2024, despite Red Bull's relative decline in competitiveness as the season progressed, he won his fourth championship — becoming only the fourth driver in F1 history to win four or more titles, after Fangio, Prost, Schumacher, and Hamilton.

"People expect me to be perfect every lap. That is fine. I expect the same of myself."

— Max Verstappen

Verstappen is the product of an unusual upbringing — his father was demanding, the karting schedules brutal, the preparation total. Jos Verstappen shaped a son who does not acknowledge pressure as a relevant concept, who processes failure immediately and does not carry it into the next corner. His mother, Sophie Kumpen, was herself a successful kart racer. The bloodlines were extraordinary; the obsession was acquired. At twenty-seven, he has four championships and is already beyond the reach of most statistical comparisons. The question of where his career ends is genuinely open. The career of Ayrton Senna lasted eleven seasons. Schumacher won titles at ages ranging from twenty-five to thirty-five. Verstappen has barely started.

"My father taught me that racing is not a hobby. It is everything. You either commit completely or you don't bother."

— Max Verstappen

The 2023 Season — 19 Wins, Most Dominant Ever

Why This Matters

Max Verstappen is rewriting the record books of Formula 1 in real time, at an age when most champions are only beginning to reach their peak. His 2023 season — nineteen wins in twenty-two races — is the most dominant single season any driver has produced in the sport's seventy-year history. He is the proof that the ceiling of human performance in motorsport has not yet been reached, and that the next generation of talent, when it arrives completely prepared and without fear, can surpass everything that came before it. He is twenty-seven years old with four championships. The mathematics of what he might eventually achieve are genuinely staggering.
