Half a semi-final, on drums
Britain's Got Talent semi-finals put a mixed field on stage on a single night: singers, dancers, comics, novelty acts. Winning one outright with a drum kit is unusual, and the margin Gaffney recorded on his night was larger still. The results table credits him with 49.2 per cent of the public vote in semi-final five, carrying him straight into the final.
The second act out of that semi-final, the boy soprano Liam McNally, went through on the judges' vote with 21.0 per cent. The gap between the two numbers is the story of the night: one act took nearly half the room, and everyone else divided the rest.
Third in a final watched by 13.5 million
The 2010 final, broadcast on 5 June, was won by Spelbound with 36.9 per cent. Twist and Pulse finished second with 12.4 per cent. Gaffney came third with 9.6 per cent.
The audience figure attached to that final is 13.50 million viewers — a number that puts a 13-year-old's drum solo in front of roughly a fifth of the United Kingdom in a single evening. The series had begun on 17 April and ran for seven weeks.
The panel and the format
Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan judged that series, with Louis Walsh standing in at the Birmingham auditions. Ant and Dec presented. The structure gave each semi-final two routes into the final: the act with the most public votes went through, and the judges then chose from those behind it.
Gaffney took the first route, which is the one that does not depend on a panel's taste. It is also the only one of the two that produces a percentage large enough to be read as a verdict on the night rather than a negotiation.
What is documented — and what is not
Firm: his age, his instrument, the semi-final he won, the exact share of the vote, his third place in the final and the date. All of it sits in the series record, which lists results rather than opinions.
Missing: his home town, his school, his family, any interview, any account of the pieces he played, and everything about his life after June 2010. The research record for this page flags his discipline itself as worth confirming against a news source; the series table lists him under music as a drummer, and that is as far as the documentation goes here.
Why third place leaves so little behind
Winning the series in 2010 meant a headline act's exposure; finishing third meant a fortnight of coverage and then the next series. British talent television has produced hundreds of semi-finalists and finalists since 2007, and only a thin layer of them — the winners, the viral auditions, the ones signed to labels — kept a public record.
For the rest, the scoreboard is the archive. It is unusually good at what it does: percentages to one decimal place, a date, an age. It simply has nothing to say about the years that follow, and this page declines to fill that silence with guesses.
