What happened in Singapore

Infobae reported on 30 June 2026 that Fabio had represented Peru at the global round of the Copernicus mathematics olympiad in Singapore and taken gold. The Copernicus competitions draw entrants from more than 50 countries, according to the same report, though it does not give the size of the field in Singapore.

It was not his first medal at that level. He had previously won silver at a Copernicus international mathematics olympiad held in New York, and in March 2025 Infobae had reported him preparing to represent Peru at a Copernicus event in the United States, describing a boy who also dreamed of becoming an Olympic athlete.

Two disciplines, one schedule

The detail that makes this record unusual is the swimming. Infobae reports 85 gold medals in the pool and roughly three hours of training a day, including sessions that begin at 5.30 in the morning.

Asked whether his parents pushed him into that schedule, he turned the question around: "No, mas bien yo soy el que los levanta a las 6, que me lleven a las 5:30" - no, it is rather that I am the one who wakes them at six, to take me at half past five. It is the single most revealing line in the coverage, and the reason the story ran beyond the sports and education pages.

The IQ number, and how to read it

On 12 July 2026 Infobae published a second piece whose headline asked what his IQ was, reporting a tested score of 146. Numbers of that kind should be read for what they are: a result on one assessment of a nine-year-old, reported by a newspaper rather than published in a scientific paper.

It is also the least interesting fact on the page. A score describes performance on a test; a gold medal at an international olympiad describes performance against other children who were also selected to be there.

Migration, and who a medal belongs to

Fabio was born in Venezuela and competes for Peru, where he lives and attends Bridge House International in Lima according to the research record. Millions of Venezuelans have settled in Peru over the past decade, and Infobae's framing of the story, a Venezuelan child winning for Peru, reflects how closely that migration is followed in both countries.

It is also a reminder of how national representation works at school level: a child competes for the country whose school system enters him, which in his case is Peru.

What is documented, and what is not

Firmly established: the gold medal in Singapore in 2026, the earlier silver in New York, his age of nine, his Venezuelan birth and Lima residence, the swimming record and the reported IQ figure.

Not established here: his date of birth, the category or exact date of the Singapore round, the number of competitors he beat, and his parents' names, which Infobae does not publish. He is a young child, and this page carries nothing about his home or daily routine beyond the training schedule he described himself.
