On October 12, 2019, in the Prater park in Vienna, Eliud Kipchoge ran 42.195 kilometres in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 40 seconds, becoming the first human being in history to complete a marathon in under two hours. The performance was not ratified as a world record — the conditions, including rotating pacers and a custom course, fell outside official record parameters — but as a demonstration of what the human body is capable of, it stands beside the most significant physical achievements in recorded history. The four-minute mile fell in 1954 after decades of declared impossibility. The two-hour marathon fell to a single Kenyan man, smiling as he crossed the line, in the autumn of a year most people remember for other reasons. He had done it, as he always seemed to do everything, as if the magnitude of the event was slightly less interesting to him than the process of preparing for it.

Eliud Kipchoge was born on November 5, 1984, in Kapsisiywa, in the Nandi District of Kenya’s Rift Valley — an area of high altitude and deeply embedded running culture that has produced a disproportionate share of the world’s greatest distance runners. His father died when he was young; he was raised by his mother, a nursery school teacher. He ran several kilometres to school every day as a child. He came to the attention of the international athletics community at age eighteen when, at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, he won the 5,000-metre gold medal — defeating Hicham El Guerrouj, the world record holder and the best middle-distance runner of his generation, in the final straight. He was a teenager competing in his first major championship.

Kipchoge ran on the track through the 2008 Olympics, winning bronze in the 5,000 metres in Beijing, before transitioning to road racing. His marathon career, which began in earnest in 2013, has been one of the most statistically dominant in sports history. He won fourteen of his first seventeen marathon starts, including London, Berlin, and Chicago. His margin of victory in major marathons was often two to four minutes — in a sport where the difference between first and fifth place is often measured in seconds, this constituted a form of dominance with few precedents.

“Only the disciplined ones in life are free. If you are undisciplined, you are a slave to your moods and your passions.”

— Eliud Kipchoge

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Kipchoge won the marathon gold medal in 2:08:44, despite running the final kilometres with a shoe that had partially separated from its sole. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in brutal summer heat, he defended his title in 2:08:38. He is one of only four men to win consecutive Olympic marathon golds. In 2022, at the Berlin Marathon, he set the official world record of 2:01:09 — a time that, accounting for altitude, conditions, and legitimate record standards, validated what he had demonstrated informally in Vienna three years earlier.

Kipchoge trains out of the Kaptagat Forests in Kenya’s Rift Valley under coach Patrick Sang, in a communal training camp with a group of other elite runners. His life there is deliberately austere — he participates in the chores of the camp, including cleaning and cooking, on a rotating schedule with other athletes. He has described this practice as essential to his philosophy: that greatness requires not the isolation of a champion but the grounding of a person who remains connected to ordinary human tasks. He reads extensively, keeps a diary, and speaks with a measured philosophical clarity about running, discipline, and the relationship between mind and physical capacity that has made him as influential as a thinker about endurance as he is as a practitioner of it.

“No human is limited. We can all achieve more than we think.”

— Eliud Kipchoge, Vienna 2019

His career losing record at the marathon is one defeat: the 2013 Berlin Marathon, where Wilson Kipsang ran what was then the world record. In seventeen marathon starts through 2022, he has won sixteen. In the two Olympics he entered as a marathoner, he won both. He is the holder of the world record, the former holder of a time beyond the world record, and the most philosophically articulate ambassador the sport of marathon running has ever produced. He is also, by the evidence of seventeen years at the highest level, simply the best there has ever been.

The Kipchoge story — from Kenya’s Rift Valley to the sub-2-hour marathon

Why This Matters

Eliud Kipchoge ran the first sub-two-hour marathon in history in Vienna in 2019, and the question of whether any human will run the second one remains genuinely open. But the significance of his career is not merely statistical. He has demonstrated, across two decades of competition, that the qualities that produce greatness in endurance sports are not primarily physical — they are philosophical. His approach to training, grounded in community, discipline, and a deliberate rejection of the ego-driven isolation that characterises many elite athletes’ careers, has made him as influential as a model of excellence as he is as a competitive force. He speaks about running in terms of joy, of process, of the relationship between the disciplined mind and the body it commands. He runs with what observers consistently describe as a smile. He is, in the fullest sense, an ambassador for the idea that human performance at its greatest is not a story about being different from other people, but about applying, more consistently and thoughtfully than anyone else, the capacities that are available to us all.
