🇺🇸 Sabrina Brady

Her best day ever was the day her father came back from Iraq. She drew it, and Google ran it

Sabrina Brady's Coming Home on the Google homepage, 23 May 2013

The 2013 Doodle 4 Google contest asked American students for their best day ever. A twelfth-grader from Sparta, Wisconsin, answered with the moment her father returned from an 18-month deployment in Iraq. Sabrina Brady's drawing, Coming Home, beat 130,000 entries and appeared on Google's homepage on 23 May 2013.

The drawing

Coming Home depicts Brady's reunion with her father after his deployment, with the letters of the Google logo worked into the scene rather than sitting beside it. The contest brief that year was a single phrase, My Best Day Ever, and most entries answered it with holidays, birthdays or inventions.

Brady answered it with a homecoming. The judgement in the drawing is not technical: it is that an 18-month absence, and its end, is the largest thing that had happened to her, and that it could be told in one image containing six letters.

The contest and the numbers

Doodle 4 Google, as the competition was then called, drew 130,000 submissions in 2013 from students across the United States. One national winner's artwork is published on the Google homepage for a day, a distribution no student competition can match.

Brady's doodle ran on 23 May 2013. The prize package was a $30,000 college scholarship, a Chromebook, and a $50,000 technology grant for Sparta High School, where she was a senior.

Sparta, Wisconsin

Brady was a twelfth-grader at Sparta High School in Sparta, Wisconsin, a small city in the west of the state. Google's announcement gives that, her grade and her subject, and little else about her.

The company also recorded her next step: she had been accepted to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design for the autumn of 2013. Like most winners of the contest, she went from a national art prize straight into an art school.

What the win came to stand for

Military families are a constant of American life that national advertising rarely touches directly, and a homepage doodle drawn by the daughter of a deployed soldier reached an audience that no campaign about deployment could buy. The Washington Post, writing in 2016 about a later winner, still reached back to the Wisconsin teenager whose military-reunion doodle had taken the prize, without needing to explain which one it meant.

That is the useful test of a doodle's staying power. Three years and three winners later, the 2013 entry was the one a national newspaper used as shorthand for what the contest can produce.

The 2016 article was itself about a different winner, a high school sophomore from Washington, D.C., whose doodle invoked Black Lives Matter. The pairing says something about what the competition rewards. Both drawings took a subject from the artist's own life that the country was already arguing about, and both were published on a page that most visitors open without expecting to be told anything at all.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented by Google's own announcement: the title of the doodle, its subject, the 18-month Iraq deployment, her grade, her school and town, the 130,000 entries, the homepage date of 23 May 2013, the $30,000 scholarship, the Chromebook, the $50,000 school grant and her acceptance to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Not documented here: her age or date of birth, which is why this page carries no birth year; her father's name, rank or unit; any direct quotation from her, since Google's post contained none; and what she has done since 2013. No later work under her name appears in the sources used for this page.
