The night the bee got a star

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is televised in prime time and built for tension rather than joy. A speller walks to a microphone, is handed one word, and either continues or does not. The house style that has grown up around it is stillness: hands behind the back, finger-spelling on a forearm, a flat delivery designed to give nothing away.

Williamson did none of that. NPR's account of the 2014 bee describes a competitor who smiled and cheered on a national stage, jumped up with his fists raised after correct answers, and fell to the floor on his knees, still smiling, when he learned he had made the finals. It was the most straightforwardly happy thing on American television that week.

Kabaragoya

His run ended on kabaragoya, the name of a large monitor lizard. What made the moment famous was what he did first. 'I know it! I totally know it!' he said, before misspelling it.

The sequence is close to a perfect piece of unscripted television: total confidence, immediate collapse, no self-pity afterwards. It is also a fair picture of how the bee actually works. A speller's certainty about a word is a poor guide to whether the spelling in their head is the right one, and every finalist eventually meets a word they were sure of.

#TeamJacob

The reaction arrived within minutes. Viewers borrowed #TeamJacob from the Twilight films and made him the story of the night, and the audience was not only the bee's usual one. Morgan Rielly, a defenceman in the National Hockey League, tweeted that the spelling bee final had taken priority over watching a game.

That crossover is the useful part. The bee's television audience expects to admire competitors; it does not expect to like them. Williamson was liked, instantly and by people with no stake in spelling, because he was visibly enjoying himself in a competition that trains children not to.

What else happened that year

The 2014 title went to two children. Sriram Hathwar, an eighth-grader from Painted Post, New York, and Ansun Sujoe, a seventh-grader from Fort Worth, Texas, were declared co-champions after both stumbled in the same round, on antigropelos and corpsbruder, and then exhausted the list of championship words. Hathwar's winning word was stichomythia, dialogue in alternating lines; Sujoe's was feuilleton, the entertainment section of a newspaper.

It was the first shared title in 52 years, and it was the second story of the night. The first was a home-schooled boy from Florida who did not win.

For scale, the bee had drawn a record 293 spellers as recently as 2009, when Kavya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kansas, took the title on Laodicean and more than $40,000 in cash and prizes. A finalist's place in that field is a genuine achievement regardless of the ending.
