The product

A Nohbo ball is one wash's worth of a personal-care product held in a water-soluble shell. The user takes one, it dissolves, and nothing is left to throw away.

The design attacks the packaging rather than the contents. A bottle of shampoo is mostly water, shipped in a rigid plastic container that exists to hold the water, and which is then discarded. Removing the water and dissolving the container removes the bottle from the supply chain entirely — from manufacturing, from freight weight, and from the waste stream at the other end.

Why single-use dosing is difficult

The engineering problem is that the shell must be robust enough to survive manufacture, shipping and a bathroom shelf, and then dissolve immediately in warm water and on wet hands. Those requirements pull in opposite directions.

There is a behavioural problem too. Consumers are used to controlling how much shampoo they use, and a fixed unit dose takes that away. A product of this kind therefore has to get the dose right for most people most of the time, or it fails on the first wash regardless of its environmental merits.

There is also a scale question that the idea raises and the source does not answer. Personal-care products are sold in enormous volumes at low margins, and a format change of this kind only reduces waste meaningfully if it reaches ordinary shelves at an ordinary price. A small company can prove that a dissolving unit dose works; whether it can be made cheaply enough to displace the bottle is a manufacturing question rather than a design one, and the Fortune entry does not address it.

What Fortune's list was

The 2016 feature gathered eighteen people under eighteen who, in the magazine's framing, were inventing products, building brands and making money while still at school. Stern appeared alongside founders in childcare, cookies, drones, skincare and travel reviews.

Fortune did not publish its selection criteria, and each entry runs to a sentence or two. The list is an editorial selection rather than a ranking, and the entries describe businesses as they stood in September 2016.

What the source does not say

The Fortune entry does not state where Stern lives, what school he attended, when Nohbo was founded, whether it had raised investment, whether the product reached retail, or what it earned. His exact date of birth is not given either; the birth year in this record is inferred from his stated age of 17 in September 2016.

The widely circulated version of this story includes a television pitch and an investment. No source used here states that. Those claims may be documented elsewhere, but they are not documented by this record and this page does not assert them.

Where Benjamin Stern is now

No source used here reports anything about him after September 2016. Whether Nohbo still operates, whether he still runs it, and what he has done since are not documented in this record.

He would be in his mid-twenties now. What the record establishes is a genuine and unusually well-aimed idea held by a seventeen-year-old: that the plastic problem in personal care is not the shampoo but the bottle, and that the bottle is the part that can be designed away.
