🇪🇸 Bakr El Asri

Beat the Kenyan steeplechase system, twice — and took the European under-20 record with him

2026 World Athletics U20 3000m steeplechase champion • European U20 record 8:24.40 • 2024 European U18 champion

Bakr El Asri was born on 28 January 2007 and runs for Spain. The 3000 metres steeplechase is the event East African federations have dominated at every age group for four decades, and the World Athletics U20 Championships are where that dominance is normally at its most complete. On 9 August 2026, in Eugene, El Asri won the world under-20 steeplechase title in 8:28.35 — a European under-20 record — and had enough of the race in hand to begin celebrating on his approach to the line. The margin over Kenya's Emmanuel Lemiso Someki was more than four seconds.

The result was not a surprise to anyone following the season. In June 2026, at the Vienna Track Night, El Asri had run 8:24.40 to break the European under-20 record in the event — the fastest time by a European under-20 in history — and he arrived in Eugene as the clear form athlete rather than as an outsider. His 2024 European U18 title had already established the trajectory. What Eugene added was the championship result to go with the time: a global title, won by a European, in an event where that combination is rare.

The race itself was decided before the final water jump. El Asri broke clear of the Kenyan challenge, which is normally the phase in which junior steeplechases are lost rather than won, and ran 8:28.35 to Someki's personal best of 8:32.81. The bronze was settled in the last hundred metres, when Kenya's Nicholas Kitum Losiwareng charged past Spain's Marti Torregrossa to take third in 8:38.05 to 8:38.13 — eight hundredths of a second, and the difference between Spain having one medallist and two.

The steeplechase is a hybrid event: 3000 metres of distance running interrupted by 28 barriers and seven water jumps, each of which costs an athlete rhythm and, if mistimed, several seconds. Junior steeplechasers who run fast usually do so by being better runners than their rivals; the ones who last tend to be the ones who are also better hurdlers. El Asri's margin in Eugene came from clean barrier work in the closing kilometre, when the field around him was losing time at each jump.

Spanish distance running has a long tradition in the steeplechase, but a world under-20 title in the event is a first-order result for the federation, and El Asri's European U20 record makes him the reference athlete for his age group on the continent. He turned 19 in January 2026, which means Eugene was his last age-eligible global junior championship in the event.

The comparison that matters is with the senior standard. The steeplechase world at senior level is currently led by Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali and a group of Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes running well under eight minutes; El Asri's 8:24.40 is a junior record, not a senior threshold, and the gap is roughly 25 seconds. The relevant precedent is that European steeplechasers who break the continental junior record have historically become senior finalists more often than they have not — but 'more often than not' is the honest strength of the claim, not a guarantee.

Two independent facts, not one: the European under-20 record set in June on a fast night in Vienna, and the global title won in August in a tactical championship final against the East African federations that normally decide this event. Athletes who can do both in the same season are the ones whose junior form usually survives the transition.

The limit is the senior gap. 8:24.40 is roughly 25 seconds outside the senior world class, and El Asri is now past the U20 age limit, so the next comparison will be against adults with no age allowance.
