What happened on stage in 2004

The 2004 Scripps National Spelling Bee was held in Washington at the end of May and decided on 3 June. Akshay Buddiga, a 13-year-old from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was at the microphone when he collapsed. Associated Press coverage carried by Fox News described him standing up immediately, beginning to spell, and drawing a standing ovation from the judges. The word was 'alopecoid', meaning fox-like. He spelled it correctly.

He continued to compete, but the reporting notes he was visibly weakened and took his later turns sitting in a chair at the microphone. His family told reporters afterwards that he would recover and needed rest. The bee's director at the time, Paige Kimble, gave the line that stuck to the episode: 'To me, that's what you call grit. It was an extraordinary circumstance.'

How the bee ended

Akshay finished as runner-up. The research record behind this page has him going out in the fourteenth round on 'schwarmerei'; the two news reports cited here name 'alopecoid' as the word from the faint but do not carry the elimination word, so it is set down as the round record rather than as a quotation from either dispatch.

The title went to David Tidmarsh, a 14-year-old eighth-grader from South Bend, Indiana, who spelled 'autochthonous' - indigenous, native to a place. Tidmarsh had outlasted 264 rivals. The field of 265 spellers was, by the standards of the time, a full house; by 2018 the bee would admit 515.

A family that had already won it

Akshay was not the first Buddiga at the microphone. The AP report notes that his brother Pratyush had won the national bee two years earlier, in 2002. Two brothers from the same household taking the title and the runner-up spot inside three years is the kind of statistic the bee's own historians keep, and it is the detail that separates the Buddiga name from the hundreds of other spellers who pass through Washington each spring.

What either brother did after the stage lights went down is not documented in the two 2004 reports used here. This page does not fill that gap with guesswork.

Why the clip outlived the competition

The bee is a televised endurance test for children, and the 2004 faint is the moment that made that visible. A boy drops out of frame, is upright again before the audience has finished reacting, and spells a word most adults have never read. The footage travelled far beyond the spelling world and is still the search that brings most people to Akshay Buddiga's name.

It is worth being precise about what the footage shows and what it does not. It shows a collapse and an immediate recovery. It does not show a medical diagnosis, and none of the contemporary reporting supplies one. Sites that attach a cause to the faint are going beyond the record.

What is documented and what is not

Documented by the 2004 wire coverage: his age of 13, his home city of Colorado Springs, the collapse, the immediate recovery, the correct spelling of 'alopecoid', the standing ovation, his second-place finish, his brother's 2002 title, the winner and winning word, and the field of 265.

Not documented in these sources: his date of birth beyond the year given in the research record, his school, his family beyond his brother, any medical explanation for the faint, and anything at all about his life after 2004. No reported IQ figure appears anywhere in this record, and none should be attached to him.
