The problem and the method
The Bernoulli quadrisection problem asks how to cut a shape into four equal parts under given constraints, a question that has been studied since the Bernoulli family worked on it in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is the kind of problem that looks simple and resists a general solution.
Kumar and Joshi approached it with particle swarm optimisation, a computational technique in which many candidate solutions move through the search space and adjust towards the best result found so far, modelled loosely on how flocks and shoals behave. Winning the national exhibition
The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition is Ireland's largest school science competition, held each January at the Royal Dublin Society, with entries from schools across the country. Pure mathematics entries are a small minority of the field and rarely take the top prize.
