The problem and the method

The Bernoulli quadrisection problem asks how to cut a shape into four equal parts under given constraints, a question that has been studied since the Bernoulli family worked on it in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is the kind of problem that looks simple and resists a general solution.

Kumar and Joshi approached it with particle swarm optimisation, a computational technique in which many candidate solutions move through the search space and adjust towards the best result found so far, modelled loosely on how flocks and shoals behave. Silicon Republic reported on 14 January 2022 that the pair had used a new method to solve an old maths problem.

Winning the national exhibition

The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition is Ireland's largest school science competition, held each January at the Royal Dublin Society, with entries from schools across the country. Pure mathematics entries are a small minority of the field and rarely take the top prize.

The pair were students at Synge Street CBS, a Dublin school with a long record at the competition. Kumar was 15 at the time of the win.

Then Europe

In September 2022 Silicon Republic reported that the Young Scientist winners had taken the top prize at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists, the continental competition to which each participating country sends its national winners.

Winning both in the same year places the project at the top of the European field for school-age science, which for a mathematics entry, competing against laboratory work with visible results, is unusual. Judges at that level have to assess a proof or an algorithm on its own terms, without a demonstration to watch, and the project has to be explained well enough that a panel can follow it in a few minutes on a stand.

Where Aditya Kumar is now

The sources gathered here end in September 2022. No university place, publication or later work is recorded, and this page does not guess at one.

Aditya Kumar is also a very common name across Ireland, the United Kingdom, India and the United States, and search results mix many unrelated people. The person documented here is the Synge Street student who won the 2022 exhibition with Aditya Joshi, and nothing on this page should be read as describing anyone else.

What is documented and what is not

Documented: the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition win in January 2022 at 15, shared with Aditya Joshi; the use of particle swarm optimisation on the Bernoulli quadrisection problem; their school, Synge Street CBS in Dublin; and the top prize at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in September 2022.

Not documented here: his date of birth, the mathematical detail of the method, whether the work was published, and anything after 2022. The birth year on this page is derived from his reported age at the time of the win.
