CALCOLO MENTALE

🇮🇳 Shashank Jain

Two golds in the Gulf

Memoriad 2024 ran from 6 to 10 November in the United Arab Emirates. World Mental Calculation, publishing the results on 14 December, recorded 121 mental calculation competitors from twenty countries, with nearly thirty further participants entered in the memory events alone.

In the eight-digit multiplications, Jain finished first, ahead of Freddis Reyes of Cuba and Jeonghee Lee of South Korea. In the six-digit square roots he finished first again, with a time of 40.82 seconds for ten tasks. Two golds in a field of that size, in two different families of calculation, is a rare double.

The square-root record

The competition result was not the end of it. The same report records that Jain subsequently set a world record of 27.3 seconds in the square-root discipline, cutting more than thirteen seconds from the time that had already won him the gold medal in the UAE.

Ten six-digit square roots in 27.3 seconds is an average of under three seconds a task, including hearing or reading the number, producing the root to the required precision and moving on. He was not alone in improving after the event: Kaloyan Geshev of Bulgaria, who won the division discipline in 71.65 seconds, went on to record 29.6 seconds.

What the disciplines involve

Eight-digit multiplication means multiplying two eight-digit numbers in the head, holding a sixteen-digit product in working memory while the partial results accumulate. There is no writing, and there is no way to check an intermediate step except by repeating it.

Six-digit square roots ask for the root of a six-digit number, typically to several decimal places, which requires estimation followed by refinement rather than a single algorithm run to completion. Both disciplines are timed across a set of ten tasks, so speed and accuracy are scored together: an error costs more than a slow answer.

Memoriad 2024

The programme covered both calculation and memory. Alongside the multiplication and square-root events, competitors contested ten-digit additions, won by Jeonghee Lee of South Korea ahead of two Indians, Parmar Priyansh Kiritbhai and Tambe Vighnesh Vijay; division by five-digit numbers, won by Geshev; calendar dates, won by Jay Baldiya Jain of India; and the Flash Anzan marathon, won by Lee with Siddhi Mukesh Jain of India second.

The memory side belonged to Mongolia, which took all six disciplines: numbers marathon, spoken numbers, flash numbers, binary digits, speed cards and number-shape recognition. Competitors chose their own events rather than contesting a single all-round title, so no overall champion is listed for 2024.

What is documented — and what is not

The firm facts are the results themselves: gold in eight-digit multiplications and in six-digit square roots at Memoriad 2024, a winning square-root time of 40.82 seconds for ten tasks, and a subsequent world record of 27.3 seconds, all published by World Mental Calculation on 14 December 2024.

Nothing personal is on the record. No age, date of birth, home town, school or occupation appears in the source, and no interview has been published alongside the results. The name is also a common one in India, so results attributed to a Shashank Jain elsewhere should not be assumed to belong to this competitor without confirmation.
