Four days in Bielefeld

The Junior Mental Calculation World Championship 2026 was held from 4 to 7 September in Bielefeld, Germany. Ninety-nine competitors took part, drawn from fifteen countries: Algeria, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Czechia, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Panama, Serbia, Turkmenistan and the United Arab Emirates.

Competitors were split by age into under-12, under-15 and under-20 divisions, with a separate alumni category for those who had outgrown the junior brackets. Arshika Gupta entered the youngest of them. The championship is scored on a points system rather than by event-by-event medals, so a single number decides each division.

The paper

The main contest is a two-hour written paper covering several distinct families of mental arithmetic: addition and subtraction, square roots, day-of-the-week calculation for given dates, approximate multiplication and division, and highest common factor and lowest common multiple problems.

The published example gives the flavour of the addition section: 726446 + 294855, answer 1021301. Six-digit sums of that kind are trivial on paper and unforgiving in the head, where a single carried digit lost early destroys the answer. Two hours of them, with square roots and calendar problems interleaved, is as much a test of stamina and accuracy as of speed.

The under-12 result

Gupta finished first among the under-12s with 2,545 points. Mohamed Imad Eddine Benyahia of Algeria took second with 2,488, and Mekan Nurgeldiyev of Turkmenistan third with 2,477 — the first medal his country has won at the championship.

The three scores sit within 68 points of each other, which in a division decided over a two-hour paper is close. The organisers noted that the winning total surpassed the previous year's top under-12 score of 2,416, so the standard at the youngest level rose year on year rather than simply changing hands.

How the divisions compare

The other winners in 2026 give a sense of what the scoring scale means as competitors age. Andrej Živanović of Serbia took the under-15 title with 2,817 points from a field of nearly fifty. Kaloyan Geshev of Bulgaria won the under-20 division with 3,045, a total the organisers noted was achieved with only two errors on the entire paper. In the alumni category, Radhika Maheshwari of India finished first with 2,691.

Read against those figures, an under-12 score of 2,545 is not a junior version of the contest but a serious total on the same paper, landing between the standards set in the older brackets. India took first place in three of the four categories contested in Bielefeld.

What is documented — and what is not

The firm facts are the ones the organisers published on 15 September 2026: the division, the placing, the score, the dates, the venue, the size and spread of the field, and the names either side of hers on the podium. A competition result stated by the body that ran the competition is close to the strongest evidence a record of this type can carry.

Everything else is absent. No age within the under-12 bracket, no date of birth, no home town, no school, no coach and no photograph appears in the source, and there is no interview or follow-up. The championship was held only weeks before this page was written, so any account of what comes next would be invention rather than reporting.
