Eighth of eight

By the closing rounds the competition had stopped functioning as an elimination. The eight remaining spellers had beaten 557 competitors aged between seven and fifteen over three days, and each new word came back correctly spelled.

Scripps abandoned the attempt and declared the whole group champions. Raja was the last name read. Each of the eight received 50,000 dollars and a Scripps Cup, and the pronouncer Jacques Bailly told them they were "the most phenomenal assemblage of spellers in the history of this storied competition".

Being last in that sequence is a quirk of announcement order rather than of merit, but it gave him the final image of the night: the eighth champion of a competition designed to produce one.

Texas supplied two of the eight: Raja from Irving and Abhijay Kodali from Flower Mound, both out of the north Texas suburbs that feed the Dallas regional contest.

Odylic

His word relates to od, a supposed natural force proposed by a nineteenth-century German scientist and long since discarded by physics. It survives almost exclusively in dictionaries and in spelling bees.

That is characteristic of the 2019 endgame. When a field of spellers has mastered the systematic vocabulary, the words that remain are obsolete, technical or borrowed from languages with few competitors in English, and a speller is left reconstructing a spelling from the language of origin rather than recalling it.

The bee's words are drawn from an unabridged dictionary containing hundreds of thousands of entries, most of which never appear in ordinary writing. A competitor who has studied the roots can attack a word like odylic through its components without ever having met it before.

What a speller does with their body

Raja rocked back and forth as he spelled, a habit visible throughout the televised rounds. Spellers develop physical routines under the microphone, and coverage of the bee tends to treat them as charming tics.

They are closer to working methods. Rocking, tracing letters on a palm or an arm, closing the eyes and asking for a fifth repetition are all ways of buying time and holding a long word in working memory while its parts are assembled. The bee gives competitors a strict time limit and an enormous amount to do inside it.

Where Rohan Raja is now

Not documented in the sources used for this page, which date from the week of the final in May 2019. His school, his studies and his life since are not established here.

The same gap applies to all eight champions of that year. The story was covered intensively for a few days and then left alone, which is why the question that brings most readers to a page like this one cannot be answered from the record.

The year the bee lost

The Associated Press headline described a competition that had proved too easy for its octet of champions. The Atlantic framed it as eight middle schoolers toppling the Scripps Spelling Bee, which is the more accurate description of what happened to the institution.

The Washington Post examined the conditions behind it that week: a field that had been expanded, and a private coaching industry that now prepares children for the bee with the intensity of elite junior sport. Scripps afterwards changed the format of its finals so that a deadlock of that size could not recur, which makes 2019 both a record and a closed chapter.
