SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Balu Natarajan

'Milieu', 1985

The word was French, the speller was 13, and the Chicago Tribune's write-up the next morning put the win down to study and, in its own scare quotes, luck. United Press International filed the result to newspapers across the country under the plainest possible headline: and the winner is 'milieu'.

It was Natarajan's third trip to the national finals. He had placed 45th in 1983 and 63rd in 1984, the sort of record that reads as failure until the year it does not. The pattern, of repeat qualifiers improving across seasons, is the bee's most reliable route to a title.

The first of many

Natarajan was the first Indian-American to win the Scripps bee, and the significance of that has grown rather than faded. In 2005 The New York Times used the bee as a lens on immigrant striving in America, a piece written two decades after his win and while Indian-American spellers were beginning to dominate the champions' list.

His own summary of what the win meant has been quoted since: that a person can be an immigrant and win a competition about the English language. It is a sentence with an argument inside it, and it explains why the 1985 result is treated as a hinge in the competition's history rather than a footnote.

What Balu Natarajan did next

He went into medicine. TIME, surveying past champions in 2016, recorded him practising internal and sports medicine and serving as chief medical officer of Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care. It is an unusually specific answer to the question that follows every child champion, and it is documented rather than assumed.

In 2015, thirty years after the win, the Chicago Tribune found him in Hinsdale, Illinois, and asked him to look back at the competition. He has remained willing to talk about the bee, which is not true of every champion.

A bee parent, forty years on

His sons have competed at the national bee, one of them in 2018, and the family was part of NPR's coverage in May 2025 when Scripps marked its hundredth year with past winners reflecting on what the title did to their lives.

A champion returning as a parent is its own kind of record. It means the preparation culture that produced the 1985 win has now been transmitted inside one family across a generation, in public, on the same stage.

Why 1985 still matters

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has run since the 1920s and has become, in the decades since Natarajan's win, one of the most competitive fields in American youth achievement. Indian-American spellers have taken the title in most years of the past two decades, supported by a dense network of regional competitions, coaching and family study routines. Almost every account of how that came about starts in 1985.

That is the strongest claim the record supports: not that one boy from Bolingbrook caused a demographic shift by himself, but that he was the first proof it could be done, and that the children who followed had a name to point to. He was 13. He had already lost twice on the same stage. The third time he spelled a French word correctly and a competition changed its sense of who it belonged to.
