How much a single paper matters
The following year shows the swing. At EGMO 2024 in Tskaltubo, Georgia, no contestant scored above 41: the highest total in the world was Hannah Fox's, one mark short of perfect, with two contestants tied on 38 behind her.
Two consecutive years of the same competition therefore produced fourteen perfect papers and then none. The difficulty of the six problems accounts for most of that, which is why a perfect score should be read as a statement about a specific examination as well as about the contestant who cleared it.
