🇺🇦 Polina Henyk

Six problems, six complete proofs, and a Ukrainian flag at the top of the scoreboard.

European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad 2023, Portorož, Slovenia — a perfect paper.

The scoreboard of an olympiad records only what was written on the day. At the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad in Portorož, Slovenia, in April 2023, the line beside Polina Henyk's name reads 42 out of 42: every problem solved, every proof accepted, a gold medal. She competed for Ukraine, and was one of fourteen contestants to reach the maximum.

A perfect paper

The official EGMO 2023 scoreboard lists Polina Henyk of Ukraine on 42 points from a possible 42, with a gold medal. The paper sets six problems, each marked out of seven, so the total means six complete solutions with nothing deducted anywhere.

Olympiad marking makes that harder than it sounds. Solutions are assessed by coordination, in which examiners and team leaders go through every written argument together and marks are conceded only where the reasoning genuinely closes. A perfect score means six proofs read by people looking for holes, and no hole found.

Ukraine on the table

EGMO teams are selected nationally, four contestants per country, and the 2023 table lists roughly fifty countries and a field of around two hundred. Ukraine's line on that table includes a contestant who dropped no marks at all.

The scoreboard says nothing about how any team prepared, travelled or trained; it is a results document and nothing more. What it establishes is unambiguous: a Ukrainian contestant sat the 2023 paper in Slovenia and finished it completely.

Fourteen at the ceiling

Henyk's perfect score was one of fourteen in 2023. The group included all four members of the Chinese team — Shuwen Hu, Lai Yuan, Sihan Su and Yiran Qiu — as well as Fidan Garayeva of Azerbaijan, Maria Drencheva of Bulgaria, Nogah Friedman of Israel, Isabella Zhu and Vivian Loh of the United States, Xiangyue Nan of Australia and two Turkish contestants, Melek Güngör and İrem Gülce Yazgan.

Fourteen flawless papers is a crowded summit by olympiad standards, and it leaves the top of the table tied. No individual ranking separates that group, because the scoring has nothing left to separate them with.

How much a single paper matters

The following year shows the swing. At EGMO 2024 in Tskaltubo, Georgia, no contestant scored above 41: the highest total in the world was Hannah Fox's, one mark short of perfect, with two contestants tied on 38 behind her.

Two consecutive years of the same competition therefore produced fourteen perfect papers and then none. The difficulty of the six problems accounts for most of that, which is why a perfect score should be read as a statement about a specific examination as well as about the contestant who cleared it.

What is documented — and what is not

The firm facts are the scoreboard's: 42 points out of 42 at EGMO 2023, a gold medal, competing for Ukraine, at an olympiad held in Portorož, Slovenia. The comparison with 2024 comes from the same organisation's scoreboard for the following year.

Beyond that, the record is empty. No age, date of birth, school, city or photograph appears in the source. There is no interview, no team statement and no account of results before or after 2023, and nothing in the sources gathered here describes the circumstances in which she prepared or travelled.
