🇺🇸 Miles Russell

At 17 he made the cut at the U.S. Open — the second-youngest man to do it since 1945

2026 U.S. Open, Shinnecock Hills • made the cut at 3-over, one shot inside the line • youngest ever to make a Korn Ferry Tour cut, at 15

Miles Russell did not win the 2026 U.S. Open, and he did not come close. What he did was survive it. The seventeen-year-old amateur from Jacksonville Beach, Florida finished thirty-six holes at Shinnecock Hills on 3-over par, one stroke inside a cutline of 4-over, and became the second-youngest man since the Second World War to play the weekend at a U.S. Open. Only Beau Hossler, also seventeen and about four months younger, had done it more youthfully, in 2012. Russell's record already included the youngest cut ever made on the Korn Ferry Tour, at fifteen, and a first PGA Tour cut earlier in 2026. In July he lost the U.S. Junior Amateur final.

A U.S. Open cut is a specific kind of test, and it is not the same as playing well. The United States Golf Association sets up its national championship to punish error: narrow fairways, penal rough, greens run to speeds that make lag putting a survival skill. The winning score is frequently around par and sometimes above it. Under those conditions, finishing 3-over across two rounds is a good score, and it is achieved by avoiding disasters rather than by making birdies.

That is why the age comparison is meaningful. A seventeen-year-old at a U.S. Open is not usually short of talent — he is short of the accumulated judgement that tells a player when to aim away from a flag, when to take the medicine after a bad drive, and when a five is an acceptable outcome. Shinnecock Hills is one of the sport's great examinations of exactly that judgement. Russell passed it by a single shot.

The precision of the record matters and is stated here rather than rounded. He is the second-youngest man since the Second World War to make a U.S. Open cut. Beau Hossler, who did it in 2012 at seventeen and roughly four months younger, remains the youngest. Several outlets covering the achievement made this distinction clearly, and there is no reason to blur it: being second on a list of two is still a rare place to be, and it is not first.

Russell's earlier record is arguably the more remarkable one. In April 2024, at fifteen, he tied for twentieth at a Korn Ferry Tour event in Florida — the developmental circuit immediately below the PGA Tour — becoming the youngest player ever to make a cut there. He won the Junior PGA Championship in 2023. In March 2026 he made his first PGA Tour cut, tying for fiftieth at the Puerto Rico Open. The pattern across those results is consistency at levels above his age group rather than a single outlier week.

July 2026 supplied the counterweight. Russell reached the final of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Saucon Valley as the clear favourite and lost 6 and 5 to Noah Maclauchlan, an eighteen-year-old who had entered the championship as an alternate. Match play is volatile and a heavy defeat in one match says less than a season of stroke-play results, but the loss is part of the record and this page includes it rather than listing only the wins.

The realistic frame is that Russell is a seventeen-year-old amateur with a demonstrated ability to compete inside professional fields, and nothing more settled than that. He has no professional victory, no major, and no completed college or professional career. Golf's history contains teenagers who converted this kind of early record into a long professional life and teenagers who did not, and the honest position is that which of those this becomes is not yet known.

The United States Open is set up to punish error rather than reward brilliance, which makes surviving thirty-six holes of it a test of judgement more than of talent. Miles Russell did it at seventeen, at 3-over, one stroke inside the cutline at Shinnecock Hills — the second-youngest man to make a U.S. Open cut since 1945, behind Beau Hossler, who was about four months younger in 2012. He is not first on that list and this page says so. He had already made the youngest cut in Korn Ferry Tour history at fifteen, and he lost the U.S. Junior Amateur final in July.
