🇸🇱 Jeremiah Thoronka

What Optim Energy does

The technology is deliberately unglamorous. Thoronka's devices sit where people and vehicles already move, and harvest the mechanical vibration of roads and pavements, converting it into current. The prize organisers set out its central advantage plainly: unlike solar or wind, it does not depend on weather, and it needs neither a battery nor a connection to an external supply.

That is the point in a country where grid power is scarce and generators are expensive. A device that produces electricity from the traffic that is already there needs no fuel chain, no import licence and no sunshine.

The two pilots

Two installations were running at the time of the award. One was at Makawo, in northern Sierra Leone; the other at Kuntoluh, east of Freetown. Between them, according to the prize's own account, they supplied free electricity to 150 households, around 1,500 people, and to fifteen schools serving more than 9,000 students.

Those are small numbers next to a national grid and large numbers next to a school science project. The distinction matters: the award was given for something already installed and running in two villages, not for a proposal or a prototype on a bench.

Where the idea came from

Thoronka was born during Sierra Leone's civil war and was raised by his mother, alone, in a camp for displaced people outside Freetown. The prize organisers describe a childhood with little access to electricity or clean energy, the condition that his invention addresses directly.

By the time of the award he was a student at African Leadership University in Rwanda. He had already been named a UN Academic Impact Millennium Fellow, had taken an award from the UN Major Group for Children and Youth as the most innovative energy start-up of 2020, and had been listed among the World Wildlife Fund's top 100 young African conservation leaders.

The prize, and what he said he would do with it

The Chegg.org Global Student Prize was launched as a student counterpart to the Global Teacher Prize, run by the Varkey Foundation, and 2021 was its first year. Thoronka was its first winner, announced from UNESCO in Paris on 10 November 2021 with $100,000 attached.

His stated plan for the money was expansion rather than exit: reaching 100,000 people by 2030, and developing the technology for health care, where reliable current matters for vaccine storage and for light in operating rooms. That target, ten years out, is the clearest measure of how he framed the invention, as infrastructure rather than as a prize-winning demonstration.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented by the prize's official pages: the invention and how it works, the two pilot sites and the numbers they served, his upbringing during and after the civil war, his university, the earlier recognitions, the date and value of the award, and his stated age of 17 at the time.

Not documented here: his exact date of birth, which is why no birth year is given on this page; the technical specification or output of the devices; whether the pilots are still running; and what has happened to Optim Energy since 2021. The research file notes that his age at the award was reported inconsistently elsewhere, so the figure of 17 is given as the prize organisers' own description rather than as a settled fact.
