ENERGIA OCEANICA

🇺🇸 Hannah Herbst

The probe

The challenge's official list of past winners records 2015 against Hannah Herbst, for an ocean energy probe for power and desalination. It is the shortest possible summary of a device that, on that description, was meant to do two jobs from one source of energy.

Ocean movement is continuous, unlike sunlight, and it is concentrated exactly where coastal communities without infrastructure tend to live. The listing does not explain how the probe captured that energy, what it was built from, how much it produced or where it was tested, and no other source in this record supplies those details.

The title

America's Top Young Scientist is awarded once a year to one entrant in a national competition for middle-school students, with no categories and no shared first place. The title therefore identifies one project from a country-wide field for that year.

The competition publishes its verdict and stops there. That makes the listing authoritative about the outcome and silent about the person, which is the standard pattern for student science prizes and the reason this page cannot responsibly say more.

A run of energy winners

Herbst's win came in the middle of three consecutive years in which the top prize went to an energy project. In 2014 Sahil Doshi won with PolluCell, generating electricity from waste materials. In 2016 Maanasa Mendu won with a piezoelectric device to improve wind power efficiency.

The year before, in 2013, Peyton Robertson had won with a salt-water sandbag for flood damage reduction. Four consecutive winners addressed environmental infrastructure — flooding, waste, ocean energy and wind — which is a clear enough picture of what the competition's entrants were thinking about in the mid-2010s.

What followed on the list

From 2017 the winners' subjects shifted towards health and detection: Gitanjali Rao's Tethys lead detector in 2017, Rishab Jain's artificial-intelligence method for pancreatic cancer radiotherapy in 2018, Kara Fan's nanoparticle liquid bandage in 2019 and Anika Chebrolu's molecular docking work on a COVID-19 antiviral in 2020.

The pattern continued with Sarah Park's AI-personalised music therapy in 2021, Leanne Fan's phototherapy headphones for ear infections in 2022, Heman Bekele's melanoma-treating soap in 2023, Sirish Subash's handheld pesticide detector in 2024 and Kevin Tang's fall-detection system in 2025. One name a year, each attached to one device.

What is documented — and what is not

The firm facts are the year, the title and the invention, published by the competition that awarded them: America's Top Young Scientist for 2015, for an ocean energy probe for power and desalination.

Nothing else is in the source used here. No age, grade, school, home town or photograph, no technical specification, no output figures, no prize amount, no quotation and no follow-up reporting. Whether the probe was developed further, and what Herbst has done since, is not documented in these sources.

Questions people ask about Hannah Herbst

What did Hannah Herbst invent?

An ocean energy probe intended to generate power and produce fresh water, which won the 2015 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

How does the probe work?

The official winners listing does not describe the mechanism, materials or output, and no other source in this record does.

How old is Hannah Herbst?

No source in this record gives her age or date of birth.

What is America's Top Young Scientist?

The single annual title of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, a national competition for middle-school students.

Is Hannah Herbst on Wikipedia?

No Wikipedia article was found for her. The challenge's official winners page is the primary published record.

Was the probe ever deployed?

No source in this record states that it was. The listing records a competition result, not a deployed device.

Who won either side of her?

Sahil Doshi in 2014 with PolluCell, and Maanasa Mendu in 2016 with a piezoelectric wind device.
