He was kayaking near his home in Ballydehob, a coastal village at the southwestern tip of Ireland, when he spotted it: a barnacle-covered rock coated in tiny fragments of plastic, barely visible to the naked eye, floating just below the surface of the Atlantic. Fionn Ferreira was sixteen years old. He had grown up on the water, paddling these coves, watching the tides. But the rock stopped him. Microplastics — particles smaller than five millimetres, fragments of degraded bottles and fibres from synthetic clothing — had reached even here, into one of the most remote coastal stretches in Europe. The question that formed in his mind on the water that afternoon would occupy the next two years of his life and eventually win him the world's most prestigious award for teenage science.

Born in 2001 and raised in West Cork, Ferreira grew up in a household that valued both creativity and rigorous inquiry. By the time he was twelve he had delivered over three hundred and eighty lectures at a local planetarium, a number that sounds improbable until you understand the depth of his curiosity — the kind that does not wait for formal structure to find expression. He was playing trumpet at orchestra level, building his own rockets, and reading chemistry. When he turned his attention to the microplastics problem, he did not approach it as a school project. He approached it as a real scientific challenge, conducting over a thousand experimental trials before he was satisfied with his results.

The science behind Ferreira's method is elegantly simple, which is what makes it powerful. Microplastics are non-polar — they do not dissolve in water, and they do not interact with water molecules. Ferrofluid, a colloidal suspension of iron oxide nanoparticles in vegetable oil, is also non-polar. When you introduce ferrofluid into water containing microplastics, the two non-polar substances are drawn together: the ferrofluid coats the microplastic particles through hydrophobic attraction. You then hold a magnet to the outside of the container. The iron oxide in the ferrofluid responds to the magnetic field, and the entire ferrofluid-microplastic complex migrates toward the magnet and is physically pulled out of the water. Run the water through a separation process, remove the magnet, and the water is clean. The ferrofluid can be reused.

Ferreira tested his method against twelve different types of microplastics — polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, nylon, and others — across water samples drawn from varying environments. After more than 1,000 trials, the average extraction efficiency was 87 percent, with some polymer types exceeding 90 percent. No heating required. No chemicals added to the water. No expensive infrastructure. The elegance of the method is that it works with physics rather than against it: magnetism does the work that filtration, chemical treatment, or ultraviolet irradiation would otherwise require.

In July 2019, Ferreira presented his project — formally titled "An Investigation into the Removal of Microplastics from Water Using Ferrofluids" — at the Google Science Fair final in Mountain View, California, competing against finalists from dozens of countries. He won the global grand prize: $50,000 and recognition as the most accomplished young scientist in the world. He was eighteen years old. The prize money came with something harder to quantify — access to a global network of scientists, engineers, and environmentalists who recognised not just the result but the method: disciplined, original, thoroughly tested.

After the Google Science Fair, Ferreira enrolled at the University of Groningen's Stratingh Institute for Chemistry in the Netherlands, one of Europe's premier chemistry research institutions. He was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 Europe list. He co-founded Fionn & Co., a startup focused on scaling his microplastic removal technology, and launched the Green Journey Coalition, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to making microplastic research openly accessible globally. He transferred to ETH Zürich — consistently ranked among the top five universities in the world for natural sciences — to continue his chemistry education. He has spoken at the World Economic Forum, the European Commission, and the National Geographic Explorer's Summit. He was named a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree.

None of this was inevitable from a village of a few hundred people on the edge of the Atlantic. What was there, from the beginning, was a quality that no school can manufacture: the willingness to be stopped by a barnacle-covered rock and to ask, seriously and persistently, what can be done. Science begins in attention. Fionn Ferreira paid attention.

The Science Explained — How Ferrofluid Catches Microplastics

Ferrofluid is a colloidal liquid made of iron oxide (magnetite, Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles suspended in vegetable oil. It is both magnetic and non-polar.

Microplastics are also non-polar — they repel water (hydrophobic). When ferrofluid enters the water, the "like attracts like" principle of polarity causes the ferrofluid to coat the plastic particles.

Extraction: A standard magnet held to the container wall attracts the iron oxide in the ferrofluid, dragging the entire ferrofluid-plus-microplastic complex toward the magnet. The water remains, the plastics are removed. Efficiency: up to 87% across 12 polymer types, 1,000+ trials.

There are an estimated 14 million tonnes of microplastics on the ocean floor. Every year, more than 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the ocean. Microplastics — fragments under 5mm, invisible to the naked eye — have been found in Arctic sea ice, in the Mariana Trench, in human blood and lung tissue. Current large-scale water treatment systems were not designed to remove particles this small. The problem is not a future threat. It is already here.

What Fionn Ferreira did at eighteen was demonstrate that a cheap, scalable, chemical-free solution exists. Ferrofluid costs a few euros per litre. Magnets are cheap. The extraction requires no power beyond the magnetic field. His 87% efficiency rate, achieved across twelve polymer types in over a thousand trials, is not a proof-of-concept curiosity — it is a working prototype for a technology that could be integrated into water treatment plants, deployed on ships, or built into portable filters for use in rivers and coastal zones. The world does not yet lack the solutions to its environmental crises. It often lacks the ingenuity and the will to see them. Fionn Ferreira, kayaking in West Cork at sixteen, saw one. That is where science changes the world: in the moment of attention before the question is even asked.
