🇺🇸 Colquitt Dean

Ha scritto fino alla fine dell'elenco dei giudici, poi ha rifiutato la foto richiesta

Co-campione, National Spelling Bee, maggio 1950, a 14 anni

The bee that could not be finished

The Associated Press reported that the judges, having run out of words, had awarded two prizes. Dean and Diana Reynard, a 12-year-old from East Cleveland, had spelled through the prepared list - meticulosity is the final word the reports record - without either of them failing.

The story travelled well beyond the United States. The Sydney Morning Herald carried it on 30 May under the plain headline that the spelling judges had run out of words, which is the kind of item that fills a foreign news column and, seventy-five years later, preserves a detail no American archive kept.

The refusal

The photographers wanted the two champions embracing. Dean declined, and the reports record his reason: he was concerned about the reaction back home in Georgia.

That is what the sources say, and this page does not extend it. A 14-year-old on a national stage, weighing what a photograph would cost him among people he had to go back to, is a compact piece of social history, and it is the reason his name is still attached to the 1950 bee rather than to a word.

Who sent him

Dean came from College Park, a town just south of Atlanta, and his place in Washington was paid for by the Atlanta Journal. The sponsoring newspaper system was the bee's engine: papers ran regional competitions for the circulation, sent the winner to the capital, and printed the result on page one whether or not their speller won.

For the Journal, a shared national title was a strong week. For Dean, it was the last time a newspaper recorded anything about him, at least in the sources gathered here.

His own bee is otherwise undocumented. No word he spelled during the rounds is preserved in the sources used here, no account of his preparation survives, and the reports name him, his town, his age and his paper. What remains of a 14-year-old's week in Washington is a shared trophy and one decision taken in front of the cameras.

How rare a tie was

The 1950 result stood as the only shared title until 1962, when both finalists missed esquamulose. Fifty-two years then passed before another, and from 2014 co-champions became briefly common, culminating in the eight-way tie of 2019.

The cause in 1950 and in 2019 was the same: the spellers outlasted the list. The bee's answer in the modern era has been longer lists, tie-breaker rounds and written tests, all of them written to prevent the situation that produced Dean's shared trophy.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the shared 1950 championship, his age of 14, College Park in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal sponsorship, the exhaustion of the word list, the final word meticulosity, and his refusal to be photographed embracing his co-champion.

Not documented in the sources used here: his school, his family, the prize arrangements and anything about his life after May 1950. The reporting of that week is the whole file.
