Taylor Wilson was ten years old the summer he set up a nuclear laboratory in his family's home in Texarkana, Arkansas. It began with a Geiger counter he had asked for as a birthday gift and a collection of radioactive minerals from a geology supply catalog. By the time he was fourteen, he had moved the laboratory to the University of Nevada at Reno, where his parents had relocated specifically to give him access to the Davidson Academy — a public school for profoundly gifted children — and where he had found faculty willing to let him use real equipment to pursue a goal that would have sounded like a science fiction premise to anyone who didn't know him: to achieve nuclear fusion.

Nuclear fusion is the process that powers the sun. It occurs when light atomic nuclei — typically isotopes of hydrogen — are forced together under extreme pressure and temperature, releasing enormous energy as they merge into heavier atoms. Physicists have been attempting to achieve controlled, self-sustaining fusion at useful scales since the 1950s; the dream of clean, virtually unlimited fusion energy has remained, decade after decade, tantalizingly out of reach. Wilson was not attempting commercial fusion. He was attempting to demonstrate it in a tabletop device using a well-established if technically demanding design: the inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC) fusor, originally developed by television inventor Philo T. Farnsworth in 1964.

An IEC fusor works by accelerating ions of deuterium (a hydrogen isotope) inward toward a central grid at such high velocities that some of them collide and fuse, releasing neutrons and energy. The temperatures generated in the fusion region — the zone at the center of the device where ions collide — can exceed forty times the temperature of the surface of the sun. The devices are real, documented, and measurable: fusion can be confirmed by detecting the neutrons produced. In 2008, at age fourteen, working in a University of Nevada laboratory with faculty guidance and equipment no kitchen chemistry set could approximate, Taylor Wilson detected those neutrons. The fusion was real. He was, by verified record, the youngest person in history to achieve it.

The fusion reactor was not the end of his scientific career at fourteen — it was the beginning of a public one. He continued working, and in May 2010 entered the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a project on detecting prompt and delayed gamma radiation from induced nuclear fission — a technique with applications in nuclear nonproliferation. He won awards. The following year, in 2011, he entered a radiation detector project designed to identify nuclear threats: "Countering Nuclear Terrorism: Novel Active and Passive Techniques for Detecting Nuclear Threats." Against a field of 1,500 competitors, he won the First Place Award in Physics and Astronomy, the Best of Category Award, and the Intel Young Scientist Award, along with a $50,000 prize. He was sixteen.

In March 2012, he stood on the TED stage — the same Long Beach conference where Adora Svitak had spoken two years earlier — and delivered a talk titled "Yup, I Built a Nuclear Fusion Reactor." He was seventeen. The audience, which included some of the most accomplished scientists and technologists in the world, gave him a standing ovation. He returned to TED the following year, 2013, to describe his concept for small, underground, sealed nuclear fission reactors that could run for 30 years without refueling, using down-blended uranium from decommissioned nuclear weapons as fuel. The proposal was not idle speculation — it was an engineering concept he had developed in real detail, one he argued could deliver clean baseline power to communities that relied on diesel generators and coal plants.

His story has been the subject of a biography — The Boy Who Played with Fusion, by Tom Clynes, published in 2015, the movie rights to which were optioned by 20th Century Fox. He has continued working on advanced nuclear technologies, speaking at international forums including the International Atomic Energy Agency, and advocating for the expansion of nuclear power as a key component of global decarbonization. The child who wanted a Geiger counter for his birthday became, at fourteen, the youngest human being to have split atoms together in his own device — a record that will not be easy to break, and which stands as one of the most improbable technical accomplishments in the history of adolescence.
