Smaller named awards went to an inchworm-style climbing robot from Shanghai, a $300 blood test for gastrointestinal cancers from Louisville, Kentucky, and an air-conditioning condensation recycler that cut power use by more than a tenth.

Maya Ajmera, president and chief executive of the Society for Science, said she was "humbled by the creativity and determination demonstrated by these exceptional students." The range in that list is the fair's defining feature: astronomy, virology, robotics and public health judged in the same hall over two days.
