BIOLOGIE COMPUTATIONNELLE

🇺🇸 Saathvik Kannan

What Bioplex did

The organiser describes Kannan's method as a biocomputational approach: machine learning paired with three-dimensional protein modelling, applied to the mutations in the mpox virus that were responsible for increased infectivity. The research identified structural changes that enable viral replication, along with patterns of antibiotic resistance, and the Society noted that the approach could be applied to other viral outbreaks.

That combination is the interesting part. Machine learning can sort through thousands of mutations faster than any laboratory can test them; structural modelling then asks what each surviving candidate actually does to the shape of the protein. One narrows the field, the other explains the mechanism.

Why mpox was the case study

Mpox moved from a regionally confined disease to an international outbreak in 2022, and the genetic question that followed was direct: what had changed in the virus. Mutation lists were available quickly; interpreting them was slower.

A method that can take a genome, flag the mutations that matter and describe the structural consequence is aimed squarely at that lag. The award summary reports the finding at the level of mechanism — structural changes enabling replication — rather than publishing sequence positions, model accuracy or a peer-reviewed paper, so the technical detail behind the claim is not in this record.

The fair and the field

Regeneron ISEF 2023 was held in Dallas on 18 and 19 May, with more than 1,600 finalists from 49 US states and 64 countries competing for nearly $9 million in awards. Every finalist arrives through an affiliated regional or national competition.

Kannan's $50,000 award was one of two Regeneron Young Scientist Awards that year; the other went to a three-student team from Bangkok for an incubation chamber that raised green lacewing survival fivefold as an insecticide alternative. Above them, the $75,000 George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award went to Kaitlyn Wang, 17, of San José, California, for an algorithm that identifies exoplanets orbiting close to their stars using less computing power than previous methods.

The company he kept on the podium

The same ceremony gave the $50,000 Gordon E. Moore Award to Natasha Kulviwat, 16, of Jericho, New York, for work on biomarkers associated with suicide. Smaller named awards went to an inchworm-style climbing robot from Shanghai, a $300 blood test for gastrointestinal cancers from Louisville, Kentucky, and an air-conditioning condensation recycler that cut power use by more than a tenth.

Maya Ajmera, president and chief executive of the Society for Science, said she was "humbled by the creativity and determination demonstrated by these exceptional students." The range in that list is the fair's defining feature: astronomy, virology, robotics and public health judged in the same hall over two days.
