In the laboratories of the Académie Royale des Sciences in Paris, Antoine Lavoisier conducted a series of experiments in the 1770s and 1780s that would do nothing less than replace one vision of matter with another. The prevailing theory of combustion held that burning substances released a mysterious substance called phlogiston, and that air played only a passive role in the process. Lavoisier, through meticulous quantitative measurement — weighing reactants and products before and after combustion with a precision unprecedented in the history of chemistry — demonstrated that phlogiston did not exist and that burning was instead a chemical reaction between substances and a specific component of air, which he named oxygen. It was not merely a correction to an existing theory. It was the replacement of alchemy's conceptual vocabulary with the modern one, the moment chemistry became a science of measured quantities rather than mysterious qualities.

Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier was born in Paris on August 26, 1743, into a wealthy bourgeois family. His father was a lawyer; his mother died when he was five, leaving him a substantial inheritance. He studied law at the Collège des Quatre-Nations but was simultaneously drawn to science, attending lectures in botany, astronomy, mathematics, and chemistry. At twenty-one he was working on a geological survey of France, and at twenty-five he was elected to the Académie Royale des Sciences — an extraordinary honor for so young a man. To fund his research, he purchased a share in the Ferme Générale, the private company that collected taxes on behalf of the French Crown — a decision that would cost him his life. The partnership made him extremely wealthy and extremely resented; tax farmers were universally hated in pre-Revolutionary France.

Lavoisier's laboratory at the Arsenal in Paris was the finest private scientific facility in Europe, stocked with instruments of extraordinary precision. He worked systematically and kept rigorous records, a method far ahead of his contemporaries. His great insight was to treat chemistry as a branch of physics: to weigh everything, account for everything, and trust the balance above intuition. This approach crystallized in 1789 when he published his Traité Élémentaire de Chimie — the first modern chemistry textbook. The book defined an element as any substance that could not be decomposed by any known means, listed thirty-three elements (some incorrectly identified, but most correct), presented a rational system of chemical nomenclature that replaced the alchemical names with systematic ones still largely in use today, and stated the law of conservation of mass: in a chemical reaction, the total mass of the products equals the total mass of the reactants. He also demonstrated, with the engineer Jean-Baptiste Meusnier, that water was not an element but a compound of hydrogen and oxygen — overturning a belief that had stood since Aristotle. He collaborated with his wife Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze, who was a skilled chemist, translator, and illustrator in her own right; she translated works from English and Latin for him and produced the meticulous engravings for the Traité. They worked together for twenty years in what was arguably the most productive scientific partnership of the eighteenth century.

When the French Revolution consumed the Ferme Générale, Lavoisier was arrested, tried, and guillotined on May 8, 1794. He was fifty years old. The mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange, on hearing the news, remarked that it took only a moment to cut off his head and perhaps a century would not be enough to produce another like it. He was not wrong. Lavoisier had transformed chemistry from a craft of approximations into a science of precision in the space of a single productive lifetime, and the conceptual tools he forged — the element, the compound, the balanced equation, the conservation of mass — remain the bedrock of the discipline today.
