Born on 25 August 1934 in the town of Forquilhinha, Arns was the 13th of 16 children born to Gabriel and Helene Arns. Her early professional career involved clinical work in hospitals before she transitioned to managing public health clinics on the outskirts of Curitiba.

Arns became the founding coordinator of the Pastoral da Criança under the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil. Her strategy utilized local volunteers to provide health education and nutritional support to families in impoverished areas. Beyond child welfare, she also established the Pastoral da Pessoa Idosa to provide social support for the elderly. Her approach integrated faith-based outreach with public health initiatives to address sanitation, malnutrition, and violence.
Final Years and Legacy
While conducting humanitarian operations in Port-au-Prince on 12 January 2010, Arns was killed by debris during the Haiti earthquake. She was 75 years old. In 2012, she was recognized as the 17th greatest Brazilian of all time. The Brazilian government inscribed her name in the Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Fatherland in 2023. Additionally, a beatification process was initiated in 2015 to honor her charitable contributions.
