Zhuo Qun Song built it not in a single blaze of teenage brilliance but across half a decade of returning, year after year, to the same grueling two-day exam — then walked away from pure mathematics for a career in quantitative trading.
A Tianjin Childhood Transplanted to Waterloo
Song was born in 1997 in Tianjin, China, and moved to Canada with his parents in 2002, settling in Waterloo, Ontario — a city that, not coincidentally, is home to one of Canada's most storied university math departments and a deep culture of competition mathematics. Song started competing in math contests in first grade, an unusually early entry point even by olympiad standards, and by seventh grade he had already won the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad, the country's premier proof-based competition for high schoolers, in 2010 — the same year he took his first IMO medal, a bronze.
Six Straight Years, Six Medals
What followed was one of the most sustained individual runs in olympiad history. From 2011 through 2015, Song won gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad every single year, adding to the bronze from 2010 for a total of six medals across six consecutive appearances. No other competitor in the IMO's history has accumulated five golds. The run demanded something distinct from a single flash of talent: repeatable, high-stakes performance against different problem sets, different years, and an ever-changing field of the world's best young mathematicians, without a single off year.
The Perfect Score of 2015
His final IMO appearance, in 2015, was also his most complete. Song was the only competitor in the world that year to achieve a perfect score — all six problems solved for the maximum 42 points — closing out his olympiad career at its absolute peak rather than trailing off. That same year, he also placed among the top twelve scorers in the USA Mathematical Olympiad, a proof-based competition distinct from the IMO, demonstrating that his edge wasn't confined to one specific exam format.
Exeter to Princeton: A Scholar's Path
Song's academic path ran through two of the institutions most associated with cultivating elite young mathematicians. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire from 2011 to 2015 — the same years as his IMO gold streak — before enrolling at Princeton University, where he graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. At Princeton he continued competing, helping the university's team finish second in the 2016 Putnam Mathematical Competition and third in 2017, evidence that his competitive instincts survived the transition from high school olympiad star to university mathematics major.
Wall Street Detour, Then Back to the Blackboard
Rather than proceeding directly into a mathematics PhD — the conventional next step for an olympiad record-holder — Song took a detour into finance. During the summers of 2017 and 2018 he interned as a trader at Jane Street Capital, one of the quantitative trading firms that has long recruited heavily from the ranks of top math and computer science olympiad medalists, drawn to their speed and comfort with abstraction under pressure. After graduating from Princeton, he worked as a quantitative researcher at Citadel LLC, another major quant firm. By 2022 he had returned to academic mathematics as a graduate student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, suggesting a career still weighing research against industry rather than one that has settled definitively into either.
Coaching the Next Generation
Since 2020, Song has served as lead coach for Canada's IMO team — a role that puts the most decorated individual competitor in the competition's history in charge of developing the next generation of Canadian olympiad talent. It is a natural, almost symmetrical turn: the student who set the record now training the students trying to approach it, transmitting whatever combination of preparation and instinct produced six medals in six years.
Why Zhuo Qun Is Called a Genius
The case for Song as a genius rests on a record that is unusually resistant to lucky-break explanations: five golds and a bronze across six consecutive IMOs, capped by the only perfect score in the world in his final year, is not the kind of thing a single gifted afternoon produces. It requires a specific, replicable cognitive skill — pattern recognition across a shifting set of unfamiliar proof problems, executed reliably under a strict clock, year after year, as the competition itself gets harder and the field of competitors turns over. The honest complication is that Song's own career choices suggest he did not treat that competitive gift as evidence of a calling toward pure research. He moved into quantitative trading at Jane Street and Citadel rather than immediately pursuing a mathematics PhD, and only returned to graduate study years after Princeton. That trajectory is common among elite olympiad alumni and is not itself a mark against his ability — quantitative finance draws some of the sharpest olympiad minds precisely because it rewards the same rapid pattern-matching skill under pressure — but it does mean the record that makes him remarkable is a competition record, not (at least not yet, per the available sources) a research one.
