Ze'ev Jabotinsky

Russian Jewish poet, founder of Revisionist Zionist movement (1880–1940)

Ze'ev Jabotinsky: Every Man Is a King

He signed his novels "Altalena" and explained, with a shrug, that the word meant "swing" in Italian and suited a man who was "by no means stable or constant." It was a rare moment of self-deprecation from the most electrifying orator the Zionist movement produced, a polyglot journalist who translated Poe into Hebrew, raised Jewish battalions for the British Army, went to prison for hiding rifles, split the movement in two, and died in a summer camp in the Catskills before seeing any of it resolved. Israel has named 57 streets, parks and squares after him — more than for any other figure in Jewish or Israeli history.

Odessa

Vladimir Yevgenyevich Zhabotinsky was born on 17 October 1880 in Odessa, in the Kherson Governorate of the Russian Empire, into an assimilated Jewish family. His father Yevno, a wheat trader, died when the boy was six; his mother Chava ran a stationery store; an older brother had died in his infancy and a sister, Tereza, later founded a girls' school in the city. He learned Hebrew as a child but described his upbringing as divorced from Jewish faith and tradition — a starting point worth remembering when reading everything he later wrote about Jewish pride.

Rome and the Pen Name

He left school at seventeen with a job as a newspaper correspondent, and in autumn 1898 was sent to Rome for *Odesskiy Listok*, writing as "V. Egal" and then "Altalena." He registered as a law student at the Sapienza but rarely attended and never graduated. What he acquired instead was Italian — he was fluent in Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew and Italian — and the liberal-nationalist political vocabulary of the Risorgimento. In 1902 he was arrested in Odessa for anti-establishment feuilletons and contributions to radical Italian publications, and held in isolation for two months. In 1914 he published the first Hebrew translation of Poe's "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee."

Kishinev and the Gun

The Kishinev pogrom of 1903 turned him into a Zionist and, more consequentially, into an advocate of Jewish armed self-defence. He founded the Jewish Self-Defense Organization to protect Jewish communities across Russia and produced the slogans that still define him: "Better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it!" and "Jewish youth, learn to shoot!" He was elected a Russian delegate to the Sixth Zionist Congress in Basel in 1903 and, after Theodor Herzl's death in 1904, became the leader of Zionism's right wing. He co-founded a union for Jewish rights equality in Russia in 1905, co-edited the Zionist organ *Yevreiskaya Zhyzn* in Saint Petersburg from 1903 to 1907, and in 1908-09 edited the pro-Young Turk *Le Jeune Turc* in Constantinople, financed by Zionist officials. He married Joanna Galperina in 1907; their son Eri, born in 1910, would sit briefly in Israel's first Knesset.

The Jewish Legion

In 1915, with the one-armed Russo-Japanese War veteran Joseph Trumpeldor, he raised the Zion Mule Corps — several hundred Jewish men, mostly Russian exiles from Palestine — which served with distinction at Gallipoli. When it was dissolved he lobbied the British government into approving three Jewish battalions, the Jewish Legion, and in 1918 served as an honorary lieutenant in the 38th Royal Fusiliers, seeing action in Palestine and among the first troops into Transjordan. He was appointed MBE in December 1919, having already been demobilized that September after complaining to Field Marshal Allenby about British Army attitudes toward Zionism.

His relationship with the Mandate authorities did not improve. On 6 April 1920, during the Palestine riots, British forces searching his offices found three rifles, two pistols and 250 rounds. Nineteen men under his command were given three years; Jabotinsky, taking sole responsibility as commander, was sentenced to fifteen and released in a general pardon that July. A court of inquiry blamed Bolshevism for flowing through Zionism's inner heart, thereby associating one of the fiercest anti-socialists in the movement with the socialist Poalei Zion.

The Break

He was elected to Palestine's first Assembly of Representatives in 1920 and to the executive of the World Zionist Organization in 1921, serving as director of propaganda for Keren Hayesod. In 1923 he broke with Chaim Weizmann and left, founding the Alliance of Revisionists-Zionists and its youth movement Betar. Revisionism demanded that Zionism openly avow a Jewish state on both banks of the Jordan, and hold that it could be achieved only through force; Jabotinsky condemned the "vegetarians" and "peace mongers" of the mainstream. Yet his politics were liberal-democratic as much as nationalist. "Every man is a king," he wrote, championing a free press, minority rights, economic liberalism and a state obliged to supply food, shelter, clothing, education and medical aid. His 1934 draft constitution placed Arabs "on an equal footing with their Jewish counterparts," made Hebrew and Arabic equal languages and alternated Jewish and Arab prime ministers. When reports circulated in 1927 that he favoured expelling Arabs he wrote furiously to *Haolam*: "I never said that... My position is, on the contrary, that no one will expel from the Land of Israel its Arab inhabitants." Benny Morris has argued that documents show him open to transfer if a Jewish state required it; Jabotinsky's own writings insist, "we do not want to eject even one Arab."

The Last Decade

Barred from returning to Palestine by the Colonial Office in 1930, he ran the movement from Europe, editing *Rassvet* in Berlin and then Paris and writing novels — *Samson the Nazirite* (1927) and *The Five* (1936), the latter now regarded as possibly the great Odessa novel. Believing Britain would no longer serve Zionism, he looked to Italy, opening the Betar Naval Academy at Civitavecchia in 1934 with Mussolini's agreement — an alignment that remains among the most contested facts of his life. In 1936 he proposed evacuating 1.5 million Jews from Poland, the Baltics, Germany, Hungary and Romania to Palestine over ten years; Beck, Horthy and Tătărescu approved, Polish Jewry was divided, and Britain and Weizmann refused. On Tisha B'Av in August 1938 he warned Polish Jews that "a catastrophe is coming closer... the volcano which will soon begin to spit its all-consuming lava," urging: "In the name of God! Let anyone of you save himself as long as there is still time." The Bund called him a "Purim General." A 2023 study by Goldstein and Huri concluded that the famous prophetic version of the speech was likely fabricated in 1958 to support repatriating his remains — and as late as August 1939 he was still certain war would be averted. After the 1939 White Paper he planned an armed revolt: land in Tel Aviv, seize Government House in Jerusalem, raise the flag and hold it twenty-four hours while a state was declared abroad. The war ended the plan. On 12 May 1940 he offered Churchill a Jewish volunteer corps of 130,000. He died of a heart attack at a Betar camp in Hunter, New York on 3 August 1940, aged fifty-nine.

Why Ze'ev Is Called a Genius

The historian Zeev Tzahor described him as "a dazzling intellectual, an exceptional writer and a brilliant statesman... A charming man fluent in many languages, sensitive to cultural nuances, and profoundly knowledgeable in a broad array of subjects." The specific quality is rhetorical and imaginative rather than analytical: an ability to make an abstract political future emotionally present to an audience, in whichever of four languages that audience spoke, and to convert it into organization — self-defence units, mule corps, battalions, a youth movement, a naval academy. He reached his conclusions early and by intuition. Armed Jewish self-defence in 1903, Jewish military units in 1915, mass evacuation from Eastern Europe in 1936 — all were minority positions when he took them, and history was unkind to those who dismissed them.

The counter-case is that intuition is not the same as judgment, and Tzahor's own verdict includes the sting: despite these talents, he never became leader of the Zionist movement. He courted Mussolini. He was certain in August 1939 that war would be averted, which is not the record of a prophet. His revolt plan was operationally fantastical and never approved by the Irgun's imprisoned commander. And the vision of Arab-Jewish equality in his 1934 constitution sits uneasily beside the doctrine that the state must be achieved through force, a tension he never resolved and his heirs largely abandoned. His genius was for articulation and mobilization — real, rare and consequential — not for the patient calculation by which states are actually founded.

Legacy

Buried at New Montefiore Cemetery on Long Island in 1940, he was reinterred on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem in 1964 by order of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol. Jabotinsky Day is an Israeli national holiday on the 29th of Tammuz; the Jabotinsky Institute in Tel Aviv holds the archives of Betar, the Revisionists, the Irgun and Herut, the party identified with today's Likud. Odesa unveiled a mural at his birthplace in April 2021, and Kyiv renamed a street for him in 2022. *The Five* has been reprinted in Russia and Ukraine and translated into English, giving the twenty-first century a Jabotinsky his political heirs rarely mention: the novelist.
