Medical Foundation and Surgical Pioneering
Graduating from the Medical University of Warsaw in 1963, Religa pursued intensive surgical training in New York City and Detroit during the 1970s. His professional trajectory took him from the Szpital Wolski to the Institute of Cardiology. As a cardiac surgeon, he introduced critical advancements in transplantation and mechanical assistance within Poland, later directing the Cardiosurgical Clinic in Zabrze and the Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw.

Beyond routine operations, Religa focused on developing new medical technologies. In 1995, he performed the first graft using an artificial valve constructed from materials harvested from human corpses. His technical research earned him a Brussels Eureka award in 2004 for the design of an implantable pneumatic heart assistance system, marking his commitment to improving patient survival through mechanical innovation.
Political Engagement
Religa balanced his medical career with a significant tenure in the public sphere, beginning with his election to the Polish Senate in 1993. Over the next decade, he participated in the founding of the Nonpartisan Bloc for Support of Reforms and the Conservative People's Party. His political service culminated in his role as Minister of Health between 2005 and 2007, during which he influenced national health policy.
