The political trajectory of Zail Singh shifted from colonial-era freedom fighter to the first Sikh to hold the office of President of India. Over a career spanning the transition from the British Raj to independent statehood, Singh navigated the complexities of regional governance in Punjab and eventually rose to national prominence as a key cabinet figure and head of state.
Early Activism and Imprisonment
Born in 1916 in Sandhwan, Singh trained as a granthi at the Sikh Missionary School in Amritsar, earning the title of giani. He became involved in the Praja Mandal movement, which sought representative governance in the princely state of Faridkot. His political activities against the established order led to his imprisonment between 1938 and 1943. During these years of solitary confinement, he adopted the name Zail Singh.
