Yuri Malenchenko achieved a unique milestone in orbital history on 10 August 2003, when he became the first person to marry while in space. While orbiting 240 miles above New Zealand aboard the International Space Station, he participated in a wedding ceremony with Ekaterina Dmitrieva, who remained in Texas during the event.
Early Military Career
Born in 1961 in Svitlovodsk, Malenchenko pursued aviation early in his career. After graduating from the Kharkiv Military Aviation School in 1983, he served as a pilot and senior pilot within the Odessa Region until 1987. His military background provided the foundation for his selection into the cosmonaut program at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, where he completed general training by June 1989.

Malenchenko has accumulated significant time in space across multiple missions, including long-duration stays on the Mir space station and the International Space Station. In 1994, he commanded the Mir-16 mission, during which he performed two spacewalks to repair external station insulation. His expertise in manual operations was highlighted when he successfully performed a manual docking of a Progress supply ship at Mir.
Shuttle and Station Operations
During the STS-106 mission in September 2000, Malenchenko served as a mission specialist aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis. This 12-day mission focused on outfitting the Zvezda Service Module and resupplying the ISS. Throughout his career, he has undertaken numerous extravehicular activities, including a six-hour spacewalk in 2000 to route power and communication cables between the Zvezda and Zarya modules.
Command Roles and Recognition
As a colonel in the Russian military, Malenchenko held key leadership roles, including commander of ISS Expedition 7. His technical contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Hero of the Russian Federation and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. As of December 2023, he ranks third for total career time spent in space.
