Military Education and Training
Yu began her formal military journey in 2005 by enrolling at the PLA Air Force Aviation University. Her four-year tenure at the institution concluded with her graduation in 2009. She was one of sixteen women to complete this training cycle, a milestone that established her credentials as a fighter pilot within the Chinese military structure.

Following her induction into the People's Liberation Army Air Force in September 2005, Yu integrated into the August 1st aerobatic team. Her public profile expanded in 2010 when she appeared alongside fellow female pilots during the CCTV New Year's Gala. Within the aviation community and among her supporters, she was frequently identified by the nickname Golden Peafowl.
Final Flight and Circumstances of Death
During a scheduled aerobatic training exercise on November 12, 2016, a fatal collision occurred in Tangshan. Yu was operating a J-10 when the incident took place. Account discrepancies exist regarding her final moments; while some documentation suggests she was struck by a second aircraft during an attempted ejection, other reports indicate she failed to initiate the ejection sequence before her jet impacted the ground.
