YoungJu Choie

South Korean mathematician

YoungJu Choie reached a milestone in her professional trajectory in 2022 by receiving the Order of Science and Technology Merit, specifically the Innovation Medal, from the President of the Republic of Korea. This honor recognizes a career dedicated to number theory and modular forms, areas of mathematics she has investigated since earning her doctorate from Temple University in 1986.

Academic Formation and Early Career

Before becoming a central figure in South Korean mathematics, Choie completed her undergraduate studies at Ewha Womans University in 1982. She pursued advanced training at Temple University under the guidance of advisor Marvin Knopp. Her early professional development included temporary faculty appointments at Ohio State University and the University of Maryland. In 1989, she joined the University of Colorado as an assistant professor, followed by a permanent move to the Pohang University of Science and Technology in 1990.

Contributions to Number Theory

Choie conducts specialized research into Jacobi forms and various aspects of modular forms. Her collaborative work with Winfried Kohnen addressed the first sign change of Fourier coefficients for cusp forms, establishing upper bounds that generalized findings previously documented by Siegel. Her research has appeared in the Journal of the European Mathematical Society and the American Journal of Mathematics, among other academic publications.

Institutional Leadership and Advocacy

Beyond her research, Choie has occupied numerous administrative roles within the global and domestic scientific communities. She served as president of the Society of Korean Women in Mathematical Sciences in 2017 and held the position of editor-in-chief for the Bulletin of the Korean Mathematical Society between 2010 and 2011. She has also contributed to the National Research Foundation and the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology.

Recognition and Distinguished Status

In 2013, Choie was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. She holds the distinction of being the first female mathematician admitted to the Korean Academy of Science and Technology in 2018 and the first woman to receive the academic award from the Korean Mathematical Society that same year. Currently, she serves as a University Professor at the Pohang University of Science and Technology, a role appointed for the 2022 to 2029 term.
