Sworn in as President of Uganda on 30 January 1986 following the Battle of Kampala, Yoweri Museveni has remained in power for over four decades. His political career emerged from revolutionary activism during his university years, leading to his eventual leadership of the National Resistance Army and the shaping of contemporary Ugandan governance through constitutional reform.
Formative Years and Revolutionary Origins
Born in 1944 in Ntungamo, Uganda, Museveni pursued higher education at the University of Dar es Salaam, among other institutions including Makerere University and Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Museveni participated in the Tanzania–Uganda War, aligning with Tanzanian forces to remove Idi Amin. Following the 1980 general election, he contested the results and initiated the Ugandan Bush War as head of the National Resistance Army. After taking the presidency in 1986, he consolidated authority, eventually overseeing the suppression of the Lord's Resistance Army and managing various regional conflicts, including interventions in the Rwandan Civil War.
