Academic Foundations and Early Engineering
Afek attended the Hebrew Reali School in Haifa before pursuing higher education in electrical engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1978. Between 1978 and 1980, he worked as an engineer developing avionics and autopilot units for UAV projects. He subsequently relocated to complete graduate studies, earning both his MSc and PhD in computer science from the University of California, Los Angeles, between 1980 and 1985.

Upon completing his doctoral studies, Afek held a research position at Bell Laboratories from 1985 to 1988. He joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science at Tel Aviv University in 1988, where he currently serves as a full professor. His administrative contributions to the institution include serving as the head of the School of Computer Science from 2014 to 2016.
Industry Contribution to Cybersecurity
In 2000, Afek co-founded Riverhead Networks, an enterprise focused on addressing distributed denial of service vulnerabilities. The resulting Riverhead Guard technology saw implementation across thousands of sites to manage multi-Gbps traffic challenges. Following the acquisition of Riverhead Networks by Cisco Systems in 2004, he maintained a formal role with the company in Israel until May 2009.
