Early Life and Succession
Born on 10 December 1917 at the Istana Balai Besar in Kota Bharu, Yahya Petra was the second son of Sultan Ibrahim and Cik Embong binti Encik Daud. Raised by his uncle, Tengku Ismail, he attended the Francis Light School in Penang and continued his education in England. His path to the Kelantan throne shifted in 1948 when his elder brother, Tengku Indra Petra, was removed from the line of succession. Yahya Petra replaced him as Tengku Mahkota Kelantan, eventually succeeding his father on 9 July 1960.

Yahya Petra served as the federal deputy king, or Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, from 1970 to 1975. Upon his election as the sixth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he assumed constitutional duties during a volatile era. His reign included the 1977 political crisis in Kelantan, which necessitated a state of emergency. As monarch, he held the rank of Marshal of the Royal Malaysian Air Force and presided over numerous state orders, including the Order of the Crown of the Realm.
Final Years and Legacy
On 29 March 1979, Yahya Petra died of a heart attack at the National Palace in Kuala Lumpur at age 61. His remains were transported to Kota Bharu for burial at the Kelantan Royal Mausoleum. His legacy persists through various infrastructure projects named in his honor, such as the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge in Kelantan and the suburb of Petra Jaya in Kuching, Sarawak.
