Xiang Xiu

3rd century Chinese scholar and writer

The Zhuangzizhu stands as a foundational commentary on the writings of Zhuangzi, representing the intellectual contributions of Xiang Xiu to the field of Xuanxue. Living in China during the third century, he navigated the complexities of political life before his death in 275 at the age of 25, leaving behind a legacy that shaped later Neo-Daoist thought.

The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove

Xiang Xiu served as a prominent member of the group known as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. This collective sought refuge from the pervasive corruption and inherent dangers associated with contemporary court politics. By retreating to rural settings, members prioritized the composition of poetry and the consumption of wine over administrative duties. His involvement in this circle underscored a broader rejection of institutional constraints in favor of individual intellectual pursuits.

Philosophical Contributions and Commentary

His primary work involved analyzing early Daoist texts, most notably the Zhuangzi. He authored the commentary known as the Zhuangzizhu, a text that was later expanded upon and amended by the philosopher Guo Xiang. Beyond these technical contributions to Xuanxue, Xiang Xiu authored the Sijiufu, or Reminiscence, as well as the Xiang Xiu Biequan, translated as Separate Biography. These writings reflect a career defined by free-thinking inquiry.

Political Survival and Legacy

The political environment of the Jin dynasty proved fatal for several of his contemporaries, including his close associate Xi Kang, also known as Ji Kang, who was executed. Following the death of Xi Kang, Xiang Xiu encountered scrutiny regarding his previous remarks directed at the emperor, Sima Zhao. By carefully reinterpreting his earlier antagonistic statements, he successfully evaded charges of treason. Despite his short lifespan, his writings persisted, influencing generations of Chinese thinkers who sought guidance during periods of political instability.
