Early Education and Travel
Born in Dresden in 1630 to Caspar Klengel and Sabina Elisabeth, von Klengel received a comprehensive private education encompassing Greek, Latin, mathematics, and drawing. His formative years included extensive travel across Europe, beginning in 1647. He visited Amsterdam, Leyden, and The Hague before reaching Paris in 1648, where he engaged in military engineering training at the Duc de Beaufort's academy. A subsequent three-year Italian tour starting in 1651 took him to Venice, Florence, and Rome, where he formed a connection with Athanasius Kircher. His exposure to European military and architectural practices continued in Malta and during his tenure as a captain in Venetian service, where he oversaw the maintenance of Dalmatian fortresses.

Upon returning to his home region, von Klengel assumed the role of master builder in Dresden in 1656. His administrative career progressed under the Saxon electors Johann Georg II and Johann Georg III, culminating in his 1672 appointment as chief inspector of civil and military buildings. Emperor Leopold I elevated him to the imperial nobility on 16 April 1664, and by 23 April 1689, he reached the rank of General Constable of Electoral Saxony. Beyond his construction projects, he managed the electoral art chamber, procuring significant acquisitions including works by Peter Paul Rubens.
Architectural and Civil Engineering Legacy
His projects transformed the Saxon landscape. Following the 1685 fire in Altendresden, he drafted urban plans that replaced narrow, crooked paths with a functional grid, establishing what is now Hauptstraße. His structural portfolio includes the elevation of the Hausmann Tower at the Dresden Residential Palace between 1674 and 1676, the construction of the Johann-Georgen Bastion at Königstein Fortress, and the chapel at Moritzburg Castle. He further designed the Holy Trinity Church in Carlsfeld, completed between 1684 and 1688, and executed extensive fortress modifications at Sonnenstein Castle near Pirna. His work combined military precision with the decorative requirements of baroque court life, leaving a lasting imprint on the Dresden cityscape until his death in 1691.
