Wojdan Shaherkani

Saudi Arabian judoka

The participation of Wojdan Shaherkani in the above 78 kg judo event at the 2012 Summer Olympics marked the first time a woman represented the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the Games. Competing in London, she secured her position through an invitation from the International Olympic Committee rather than standard qualification ranking criteria.

Olympic Selection and Training

Born in Mecca in 1996, Shaherkani trained under the guidance of her father, who served as a judo referee. Prior to the London Games, she held a blue belt, denoted as nikyū, which was two levels below the black belt status common among her fellow competitors. Her entry into the tournament was finalized following negotiations between the Saudi government and international sporting bodies.

The Hijab Negotiation

Participation was contingent upon adherence to specific requirements set by the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, including modest dress and the presence of a male guardian. On 30 July 2012, the athlete announced she would withdraw if denied the right to wear a hijab. The International Judo Federation and the International Olympic Committee ultimately approved a specialized, tight-fitting, cap-style head covering.

London Competition Performance

The match concluded after 82 seconds with a loss for the Saudi athlete. Despite the outcome, the duration of her performance exceeded that of the shortest match in the same weight class. The match was officiated by Wilian Rosquet with judges Young Chun Jeon and Cathy Mouette.

Public Reception

While local Saudi television did not broadcast the event live, the match was accessible in the Kingdom through satellite networks. Following her elimination, Shaherkani noted that the public debate surrounding her participation and the novelty of competing in such a large tournament made it difficult to maintain focus. She expressed a desire to continue practicing judo and stated her intent to remain involved in the sport.
