In 2016, the midfielder moved to Argentina to join Boca Juniors. During his tenure with the Argentine side, he won the Primera División twice, in the 2016–17 and 2017–18 seasons. His time in Argentina also included a notable appearance in the 2018 Copa Libertadores Finals at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, where he received a red card for two bookable offences during the second leg against River Plate. His performance that year was sufficient to earn him a spot on the 2018 Copa Libertadores Team of the Tournament.
Russian Premier League Tenure
Barrios transferred to Zenit Saint Petersburg on 1 February 2019, initially signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. He has since become a central figure for the club, extending his deal multiple times, most recently until June 2027. His trophy haul in Russia is substantial, including four league titles as of 2026, two Russian Cup victories, and five Russian Super Cup titles. He received the accolade of Russian Premier League Defensive Midfielder of the Season for the 2019–20 campaign.
International Representation
Before becoming a fixture for the senior Colombia squad, Barrios represented his nation at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He has since accumulated over 50 caps for the national team. His tournament experience includes participation in the 2018 World Cup, as well as the 2019 and 2021 Copa América, finishing third in the latter.
