A 1651 military expedition led by Janusz Radziwiłł to Kiev provided the opportunity for Willem Hondius to produce the inaugural portrait of the Cossack leader Bohdan Khmelnytsky. This event marked a distinct period in the career of a Dutch printmaker whose work bridged the technical rigor of The Hague with the political landscape of the Polish royal court.
Early Career and Training
Born in The Hague in 1598, Hondius emerged from a family environment deeply embedded in the Dutch printing trade. As one of seven children of Hendrik Hondius the Elder and Sara Jansdochter, he was exposed to the specialized industry of copper engraving and publishing from an early age. His formative years in the Dutch Republic established his expertise in painting, illustration, and the technical aspects of the engraving process before his relocation.

Hondius first traveled to Gdańsk in 1636, eventually settling in the city permanently by 1641. His professional standing in Poland flourished under the patronage of King Władysław IV Waza. The monarch bestowed upon him the titles of Chalcographus privilegialus and Chalcographus Regius, cementing his role as a privileged engraver to the royal court. This position facilitated his work across various visual arts, including cartographic material and formal portraiture.
Personal Life and Final Years
His personal history was marked by two marriages. In 1632, he married Kornelia van den Enden in The Hague. Following his move to Gdańsk, he married Anna Mackensen, the daughter of the Royal Goldsmith, in 1646. While records of his professional activities remain clear through 1651, documentation regarding his life ceases after 1652. Historians suggest his death occurred in 1658 at the age of 60 in Gdańsk.
