The publication of Nauwkeurige beschrijving van de Guinese Goud- Tand- en Slavekust in 1704 established a record of African commerce that remained the primary authority for over one hundred years. Willem Bosman wrote this volume following his career as a merchant and slave trader with the Dutch West India Company, documenting regions of the Guinea coast.
Early Career and Advancement
Born in Utrecht in 1672, Bosman entered the service of the Dutch West India Company at age 16. He began his tenure as an apprentice and ascended through the corporate hierarchy to achieve the rank of head merchant, or opperkoopman. He spent the majority of his professional life stationed on the Dutch Gold Coast, gaining firsthand knowledge of regional logistics and trade operations.

Bosman's writing provides a granular account of the Komenda Wars, a conflict in which he was an active participant. His observations encompassed the mechanics of the slave trade, noting that human markets operated under systems comparable to livestock commerce in Europe. The text gained historical significance in the twentieth century as a primary source for Ghanaian history, and the 1705 English translation was republished in 1907 with the involvement of Alfred Lewis Jones.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1702, Bosman returned to the Dutch Republic. Records regarding his activities after 1703 are nonexistent. His influence persists through the surname Bossman in Ghana, which is attributed to children born from his relationships with local women during his time in Africa.
