Academic Foundation and Research
Born in Aalen in 1953, Sobek pursued studies in structural engineering and architecture at the University of Stuttgart between 1974 and 1980. After serving as a post-graduate fellow studying wide-span lightweight structures, he completed his doctorate in 1987. His academic career continued as a professor at Leibniz University Hannover starting in 1991. By 1994, he returned to the University of Stuttgart to succeed Frei Otto as director of the Institute for Lightweight Structures. He later established the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design, merging structural engineering analysis with architectural design to optimize building performance and recyclability.

In 1992, Sobek founded his eponymous firm, Werner Sobek, which now operates offices in Stuttgart, Frankfurt, London, Moscow, New York, and Dubai. The firm employs over 200 staff members. Their portfolio features international projects including the Sony Center in Berlin, the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, and the Interbank building in Lima. His work emphasizes high-rise construction, façade engineering, and the development of sustainable, resource-efficient structural systems.
Sustainability and Innovation
Sobek is noted for his research into self-sufficient prototype housing, specifically projects designated R 128, H16, and B 10. He advocates for reduced environmental impact through carbon-fiber frames and ultrathin wall systems, such as his R-129 study. In 2007, he co-founded the German Sustainable Building Council and later established the Stuttgart Institute of Sustainability in 2011 to promote new construction techniques. His dedication to these principles earned him the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2019.
